About this place

Poil Catholic Church is a parish of the Second Vicariate, Anyang 2 District, in the Diocese of Suwon, forming the Catholic community of the Poil area in Uiwang. It is registered in the official Catholic directory as an independent parish and is dedicated to Mary under the title Queen of Peace.

The title “Queen of Peace” gives the Poil community a clear Marian character. Through Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, prayer, and fellowship, the parish serves as a pastoral center where local Catholics can live their faith consistently and where families and generations are connected within an ordinary community of faith.

Today Poil is one of the parishes serving Uiwang, responsible for the liturgical and faith-formation life of local Catholics. Rather than being defined by a particular pilgrimage event or heritage monument, its distinctive character lies in being close to everyday life, a place where believers meet and practice their faith and where a stable Catholic community is visible within the city.

History & origins

The Poil Catholic community developed an independent pastoral base amid the growth of the Catholic population in Uiwang during the 1980s. According to a Diocese of Suwon article, it was separated from Hogye-dong Parish in 1985 and began celebrating Mass in a temporary church set up in a commercial building. In 1986 a groundbreaking ceremony was held for the construction of a parish church.

After passing through a mission-station stage, the community was elevated to parish status in 1987. The Catholic Church directory records March 24, 1987, as the establishment date of Poil Parish. This gave the community an institutional foundation as an independent parish after its earlier temporary liturgical space and mission-station stage.

The diocesan record for the 25th anniversary recalls the long period of prayer and offerings made by the early parishioners for a permanent church. Because the same article contains internally conflicting statements about the year of the church's dedication, that date has not been asserted here. The early history of Poil is best understood as the gradual growth from a temporary liturgical space into an independent parish with its own church community.

Taken together, the sources show a community that first secured a place where people could gather for the liturgy and then moved toward building a church and becoming an independent parish. The exact date of the church’s dedication has been left aside because of conflicting information in the source, but the broader sequence—an independent Catholic community taking shape in the mid-to-late 1980s—is supported by both the Catholic directory and the diocesan record. The official record is especially valuable because it confirms a continuous sequence from the temporary church to the groundbreaking and then from mission station to parish status. It shows that the community itself formed first and that a permanent church and parish structure were developed step by step in response to the needs of that community.
