About this place
Paengseong Catholic Church is the church of Paengseong Parish in the Pyeongtaek District of the First Vicariate of the Diocese of Suwon. Its patron is Saint Paul Chong Ha-sang. The parish church is the center of Catholic life for the faithful of Paengseong-eup, Pyeongtaek, where Mass, the sacraments, faith formation, fellowship, and service take place. In the long-established communities of southern Pyeongtaek and amid continuing regional change, it gathers Catholics of different generations into one worshiping community.
The present church is a permanent place of worship prepared through years of effort and offerings by the parish community. From this church the parish continues its Sunday and weekday liturgies, catechesis, fellowship, and service, sustaining ordinary Catholic life in the local area. The patronage of Saint Paul Chong Ha-sang, a Korean martyr, also links the community's identity with the witness of faith that has a central place in the history of the Catholic Church in Korea.
History & origins
According to the Catholic Directory of Korea, Paengseong Parish was established on August 1, 1983. Around the time the parish was taking shape, construction of a church was already underway. A contemporary Catholic Times report records that the church, begun in May 1982, was completed after about two and a half years and dedicated on November 23. The early history of the parish therefore involved the formation of an independent community and the building of a permanent church at roughly the same time.
As the years passed, the parish again came to need a new church to replace the older building, and the community prepared for the project over a long period. Diocesan records state that on September 18, 2011, the parish's twenty-eighth anniversary year, a newly built church funded through the efforts and offerings of parishioners was dedicated. Bishop Mathias Lee Seong-hyo, then vicar general, presided, and the diocese described the new church as a sign of the community's unity and faith.
The sequence from the parish's formation and first church in the early 1980s to the dedication of another new church in 2011 shows how Paengseong Parish repeatedly renewed the physical setting of its Catholic life in response to changing local circumstances. More than the buildings themselves, the two construction periods record the continuing effort of the faithful to sustain their community and hand on the faith to later generations.
