About this place

Osan Parish is the central parish of the Osan District in the First Vicariate of the Diocese of Suwon and has Our Lady, Star of the Sea, as its patron. With a long Catholic tradition in the Osan area, it serves as an important center for local Catholics through the Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and parish community life.

The Sisters of Notre Dame are also present in the parish today, and clergy, religious, and lay faithful share in liturgy, formation, and service according to their respective vocations. Because the history of several neighboring parishes is connected with Osan Parish, it also carries a significance beyond its present boundaries as a place preserving the memory and transmission of faith in the wider local Church.

To understand Osan Parish, its long history and its present role as the center parish of the Osan district need to be considered together. It preserves the memory of generations who have practiced their faith in the area while also serving today as a point of pastoral cooperation within the district. The accumulated history of local mission stations and daughter parishes further explains the broad identity of the community.

History & origins

The Catholic faith began to take root in the Osan area around the 1890s. According to the Diocese of Suwon's parish history, mission-station communities developed in places such as Beoreum-ri and Jandari, and an Osan-ri mission station was established in 1955, creating a local Catholic base that would later grow into a parish.

As the number of Catholics increased, Osan Parish was established in 1964. At first the community had no independent church building and gathered in the home of the mission-station leader. A church became possible when the lay leader Seo Sang-gil, Hubert, donated land. The beginning of the parish thus shows how evangelization and material sacrifice by local Catholics directly formed the foundation of the community.

As the parish continued to grow, the church was expanded in 1987. In 1990 a committee was formed for a new church project, a new site was acquired, and a long-term building effort followed. As the population and number of Catholics in the Osan area increased, Galgot-dong and other parishes were later separated from Osan Parish, gradually dividing the territory that the older parish had once served.

The history of Osan Parish therefore runs from small Catholic communities and mission stations at the end of the nineteenth century, through the establishment of an independent parish and church, to a mature community that in turn gave rise to new parishes. Its present role as the central parish of the district stands on this accumulated history of evangelization in the region. In particular, the movement from mission stations to an independent parish and then to a mother parish from which other communities were separated shows the close relationship between urban growth in Osan and the expansion of the Catholic community. Since the diocesan account traces the local faith tradition back to the late nineteenth century, the history of Osan Parish is more accurately understood as a history of evangelization, offerings, and the branching of communities across generations than as the chronology of a single church building.
