About this place
Opo Catholic Church is the parish church of a parish in the Gwangju District of the Second Vicariate of the Diocese of Suwon, with St. Paul Chong Ha-sang as its patron saint. It is the central church of an independent parish where Catholics in the Opo area of Gwangju gather for Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and community life.
The Catholic Directory of Korea officially confirms the parish’s diocesan affiliation and patron saint. With the Korean martyr St. Paul Chong Ha-sang as its patron, the community remembers and transmits the witness of Korea’s Catholic martyrs through the ordinary life of the parish.
History & origins
Opo Parish was established as a parish of the Diocese of Suwon on October 1, 2004. The Catholic Directory of Korea records this date of establishment and names St. Paul Chong Ha-sang as the parish’s patron saint.
Its parish lineage leads back to Gwangju Parish. In its historical account of Gwangju Parish, the Diocese of Suwon states that, as pastoral work expanded in the region, Gwangju Parish successively gave rise to Gonjiam, Gwangnam-dong, Neungpyeong, Opo, and Chowol parishes. The establishment of Opo Parish can therefore be understood within the broader growth of the Catholic community and local living areas in Gwangju, as pastoral communities were divided into units closer to where people lived.
