Noonsadong Mission Station

History & origins

The concrete development of Noonsa-dong Mission Station can be traced in the history of Gwangmyeong Parish. As the Catholic population in the Gwangmyeong area grew, the parish needed a separate place where Catholics in Noonsa-dong could gather closer to home within its expanding territory. On January 20, 1991, it therefore purchased a 271-pyeong site with a 40-pyeong building and an additional 37 pyeong of forest land at 220-13 Noonsa-dong to serve as the mission-station property.

After the property was secured, the community took formal shape, and a signboard ceremony for Noonsa-dong Mission Station was held on May 1, 1992. This record shows that the mission station was not merely a named group but a local Catholic center with actual land and a building. At the time it operated under Gwangmyeong Parish, linking the prayer and gatherings of Catholics on the edge of the growing city with the pastoral life of the parish.

The sources reviewed do not establish the exact date when jurisdiction later shifted to the present mother parish of Gwangmun. The current Catholic directory, however, clearly lists Gwangmun as the mother parish and gives Gwangmun Church as the representative address. The mission station can therefore be understood as having originated within the expansion of Gwangmyeong Parish’s local ministry and later becoming connected to Gwangmun Parish as parish boundaries and pastoral structures changed.

The importance of Noonsa-dong’s history lies less in the construction of a large church than in the effort to provide a distinct place of faith for a small neighborhood community during rapid urbanization. The local center begun through the purchase of land and the 1992 inauguration now remains in a form more closely integrated with its mother parish, preserving a trace of how the parish structure of the Gwangmyeong area grew and became more differentiated.
