About this place
Nogok Mission Station belongs to Mirinae Parish in the Anseong district of the First Vicariate of the Diocese of Suwon. It is not an independent parish but a small local center linking Catholics in the Nogok area with the pastoral life of Mirinae Parish, and it remains listed by the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Korea as a mission station under that parish. Because the Mirinae area preserves a long history of Catholic villages and martyr faith in Korea, Nogok can also be understood as one of the local foundations of Catholic life in that historical landscape.
A mission station is normally smaller than a parish church and often has no resident priest, but it enables local Catholics to pray together close to home and remain connected with parish ministry. In the history of Mirinae Parish, records specifically mention the construction of a hall at Nogok and the development of an educational function there. Its meaning today lies less in the size of its congregation than in having maintained a place where faith memory and community ties could continue across a broad rural area.
History & origins
The history of Nogok Mission Station is best understood within the broad territory once served by Mirinae Parish. Mirinae Parish was separated from Gatdeungi Parish and established in 1896, and the Korean Catholic Encyclopedia records Nogok-ri among its early areas and notes the existence of a mission station at Nogok. Even as Mirinae itself went through periods of suppression and revival as a quasi-parish, Catholic life in the surrounding region continued through its network of mission stations.
Clear evidence that Nogok acquired its own facilities appears in records from the 1980s. In July 1984, Mirinae Parish constructed a hall of 99 pyeong at Nogok Mission Station. The building provided a place where Catholics spread across a broad rural territory could gather and pray without always traveling to the parish center.
In March 1989, a kindergarten affiliated with Mirinae Parish was opened at the mission station. This shows that Nogok served not only as a place for prayer and Catholic gatherings but also took on an educational role for the local community. Later details of its operation are not well documented, but the current Catholic directory still lists Nogok under Mirinae Parish, confirming the continuation of that historic relationship.
Nogok’s history is therefore less a story of an independent parish growing on its own than of the pastoral reach of the old Catholic center at Mirinae extending into surrounding rural communities. Facilities such as the hall and kindergarten preserve evidence that the mission station once combined prayer, gathering, and education, while the place today continues to carry the memory of that relationship.
