About this place
Neungpyeong Catholic Church is a parish of the Gwangju District in the Second Vicariate of the Diocese of Suwon. It is the local Catholic community in the Neungpyeong area of Gwangju where the faithful gather for liturgy and the sacraments. Its patron is Saint Andrew Kim Taegon, Korea’s first priest and a martyr, linking the parish’s identity closely with the Korean Church’s tradition of faith and martyrdom.
The parish serves as a center for Mass, sacramental life, catechesis, fellowship, and service. Having Saint Andrew Kim Taegon as patron also gives the community a missionary emphasis: faith is not to remain merely private, but is to be witnessed to neighbors through proclamation and daily life.
Since its establishment, Neungpyeong Parish has grown together with its surrounding area. Diocesan and Catholic press records show that evangelization and charitable sharing have remained notable concerns of the community. Visitors can therefore understand it not simply as a religious building, but as a local parish that has sustained evangelizing and communal life in the Gwangju area for many years.
History & origins
Neungpyeong Parish was established on January 25, 2000. Around the Great Jubilee, the Diocese of Suwon created a number of new parishes in areas where the Catholic population and residential zones were expanding, and Neungpyeong began as an independent parish in that wider development. Saint Andrew Kim Taegon was chosen as its patron.
After its establishment, evangelization became one of the parish’s important concerns. In the Diocese of Suwon’s record of the 2005 missionary awards, Neungpyeong was selected as an outstanding parish for evangelization in the category of parishes with fewer than 2,000 faithful. This indicates that the young community was not content merely to build an organization, but actively worked in home visitation, care for catechumens, and other forms of evangelization.
In 2025 the parish celebrated the 25th anniversary of its establishment with a Mass of thanksgiving. The Catholic Times described how the small community of its early years had grown into a parish practicing love and service in the local community. The anniversary was recorded not simply as a remembrance of the past, but as a renewed commitment to love and serve neighbors and continue proclaiming the Gospel.
