About this place
Neunggok Catholic Church is a parish of the Siheung District in the Second Vicariate of the Diocese of Suwon. It is the local Catholic community where the faithful of the Neunggok area of Siheung gather around the Mass and the sacraments. Its patrons are the Blessed Virgin Mary and Saint Joseph of the Holy Family, giving the parish a spirituality that looks to Jesus, Mary, and Joseph as a model for living the faith within the family and caring for neighbors and the wider community.
Within a modern residential area, the parish is a place not only for sacramental life such as Baptism, Matrimony, and funerals, but also for catechesis, faith groups, and community activities for different generations. As an independent parish, it enables local Catholics to receive liturgical and pastoral care without having to travel to a more distant church.
To understand Neunggok Parish, it is important to see it not simply as a church building but as a parish community organized alongside the development of a new urban district. Although it is relatively young, it serves as a local parish of the Diocese of Suwon that helps the faithful live the Gospel in everyday family and neighborhood life under the spiritual sign of the Holy Family.
History & origins
Neunggok Parish began on September 2, 2008, when the Diocese of Suwon established a new parish in the Siheung area. The diocesan notice at the time designated a religious site within the Siheung Neunggok housing development as the future parish property, while a temporary parish location in Hajung-dong was to be used before the community settled on its permanent site. From the beginning, the parish was therefore created to meet the pastoral needs of a newly developing residential district.
The new community did not begin in a completed church. It had to build its parish life while moving between temporary facilities and the designated future site. As the parish became established in Neunggok-dong, it acquired a stable setting for the Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and parish groups. The church now recorded on Seungji-ro in Catholic directories represents the settled parish that emerged from this early temporary stage.
With the Blessed Virgin Mary and Saint Joseph of the Holy Family as its patrons, the parish has developed with a clear concern for helping families in a new residential area put down roots in the life of the Church. A reliable official source for the exact date of dedication of the church building was not found in this research, so this history is limited to the verified establishment and settlement of the parish.
