About this place
Namyang Catholic Church is a parish of the Hwaseong district in the First Vicariate of the Diocese of Suwon and is dedicated to Saint Joseph the Worker as its patron. It is the ordinary parish responsible for Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and community life for Catholics in the Namyang area of Hwaseong, with the Sisters of the Korean Martyrs participating in parish ministry. While the nearby Shrine of Our Lady of Namyang is a pilgrimage site centered on the commemoration of martyrs and Marian devotion, Namyang Parish serves the everyday life of faith of local Catholics.
The parish has a long tradition of caring for a broad rural territory and numerous mission communities. Within the ordinary structure of parish life, it continues to celebrate the Eucharist and the sacraments while fostering formation, fellowship, and service to the local community. Because the history of the local Church in Namyang developed alongside the pilgrimage tradition of the shrine, the parish can be understood as a stable center that connects extraordinary moments of pilgrimage with the daily practice of Catholic faith.
History & origins
The Catholic community in Namyang took root through mission stations long before the parish itself was established. The Korean Catholic Encyclopedia records early communities at Baekhak and Hwalchori around the time Wangnim Parish was established, while Namyang-ri and Anseok-ri also appeared on mission-station lists by the early 1920s. The Namyang mission community became more active in the 1950s, when local Catholics organized a committee for a church building and prepared the foundation for an independent parish.
The community was separated from Wangnim Parish and established as Namyang Parish on October 8, 1961. In its early years, the parish combined pastoral care for its rural mission communities with efforts to improve the lives of local residents. Land reclamation and agricultural development were pursued as social initiatives to raise incomes, while the growing number of Catholics led to the acquisition of a new site and completion of a church in 1966. An education center followed in 1972, expanding the parish’s capacity for formation.
Because the parish originally covered a broad territory, the growth of Catholic communities in the region eventually led to the creation of daughter parishes. Sagang Parish was separated in 1975, and a diocesan account of Namyang’s fiftieth anniversary records the later separation of Bibong Parish in 2001 and Mado Parish in 2011. The pattern reflects the transformation of a rural parish with many mission stations as it adjusted its boundaries and fostered new communities in response to demographic and regional change.
Parts of Namyang Parish’s history intersect with the development of the nearby shrine, but the parish’s central task remained the ordinary pastoral care of local Catholics. Its work of caring for mission communities, expanding worship and education facilities, and giving rise to new parishes shows how Namyang served as one of the mother communities of Catholic life in western Hwaseong. The parish today continues this accumulated local tradition while retaining a role distinct from that of the pilgrimage shrine.
