About this place

Myeonghak Catholic Church is the church building of Myeonghak Parish, part of the Anyang 1 District of the Second Vicariate in the Diocese of Suwon. The official Catholic Directory of Korea records St. Andrew Kim Taegon as its patron. In one of Anyang’s long-established urban neighborhoods, the parish is a center of local Catholic life where the faithful form a community around Mass and the sacraments and continue Scripture-based formation, catechesis, devotional practice, and service. The area had a Catholic mission-station tradition even before the parish was created, so the present church also carries a longer local history of faith.

With St. Andrew Kim Taegon as patron, the parish places the Korean Catholic tradition of martyr faith at the heart of its identity. Parish life accompanies important moments such as Baptism, Marriage, and funerals, while faith formation, prayer, and service to neighbors continue across generations. The church is therefore best understood not simply as an older religious building, but as the center of a parish community in Anyang where a longstanding Catholic tradition continues today through liturgy and Gospel-centered life.

History & origins

The Catholic community in the Myeonghak area predates the establishment of the parish by many decades. According to the Diocese of Suwon’s historical account, Catholics gathered in the former Jujeop-ri area through the missionary work of St. Francis Choe Gyeong-hwan, who had settled near Surisan during a period of persecution. By the time Hauhyeon Parish was established in 1900, Jujeop-ri was one of its larger mission stations. After Anyang Parish was founded in 1954, the community was incorporated as the “6-dong mission station.” This background shows that Myeonghak Parish did not suddenly emerge with urban development but grew from a much older local Catholic foundation.

Preparations for a parish intensified in the 1970s. In 1971, Jungang Parish secured a church site during the Anyang urban-planning process, and rapid urbanization brought such growth in population and Catholic numbers that new parishes became necessary. Construction of the church began in July 1978, and on October 4 of that year Myeonghak Parish and Bisan-dong Parish were established. Myeonghak was initially called “Anyang 6-dong Parish,” but the name was changed to “Myeonghak Parish” in 1980.

After its establishment, the parish developed activities that joined local service with Catholic life. It offered free Korean literacy classes and in 1988 organized a service group for elderly people living alone. In its devotional life, relics of the parish patron, St. Andrew Kim Taegon, were placed in the altar in 1985 and home-based rotating prayer was encouraged; sustained Bible-reading and sacred-music initiatives also followed. This history shows a community that has carried forward an older mission-station tradition, adapted to urban growth, served its neighbors, and maintained a strong link with the Korean Church’s martyr heritage.

A further characteristic of Myeonghak is that the long transition from mission station to parish and the parish’s later social service appear within the same historical narrative. After preserving its older local Catholic roots and being reorganized as an urban parish, the community extended that faith into education and care for neighbors. Its history can therefore be read as a process in which the Catholic community and the surrounding society changed together.
