About this place
Munhori Catholic Church is the church building of Munhori Parish in the Hanam–Yangpyeong area of the Second Vicariate of the Diocese of Suwon, serving Catholics throughout Seojong-myeon in Yangpyeong County. The parish patron is St. Francis Choe Gyeong-hwan. The community stands on a local tradition of faith that continued for many years as a mission station, and today it functions as an independent parish celebrating Mass and the sacraments and providing catechesis and community life. Munhori is therefore best understood not simply as a recently constructed building, but as the parish church in which the long-standing Catholic community of the Seojong area gathers.
The present church was newly prepared with the actual needs of the community, including elderly parishioners, in mind. Diocesan sources explain that the previous church had become old and cramped, providing an important reason for constructing a new one, and they also record support for the project from neighboring parishes. The process shows Munhori as a relatively small rural and semi-rural parish that continues its life of faith through solidarity with nearby parishes and the wider diocese.
History & origins
The roots of the Munhori community reach back to a Catholic village formed around 1880 in Munhori, Seojong-myeon, and to the “Muneomi” mission station that arose there. The station was first under Pungsuwon Parish and a parish in the Wonju area; after Yongmun Parish was established in 1908 it belonged to Yongmun. It later continued as a mission station of Yangpyeong Parish, and when Yangsuri Parish was established in 2003 it became one of its mission stations. Although its mother parish changed over time, the Catholic community in Munhori continued celebrating Mass and praying in the same locality and gradually built the foundation for becoming an independent parish.
The community used a mission-station church built in the late 1990s for many years, and in June 2014 Munhori was finally elevated to parish status. As time passed, however, the old building developed leaks and lacked sufficient space, and it became increasingly inconvenient for a community with many elderly members. The parish collected construction funds over a number of years and linked the building effort with spiritual preparation through the Rosary and a parish-wide continuous copying of Scripture. The mother parish, neighboring parishes, and the diocese also helped ease the burden on the relatively small community.
Construction of the new church began in earnest with the groundbreaking Mass on June 15, 2024. During construction, the community continued parish life while using other facilities, including celebrating the principal Sunday Mass at its mother parish, Yangsuri. After about one year and five months of work, an entrance Mass was celebrated in the new church on November 9, 2025, and the faithful began community life again in the new building.
Munhori’s history thus runs from a Catholic village to a mission station, from a mission station under several mother parishes to an independent parish, and from an aging mission-station church to a new parish church. It is not merely a story of replacing one building with another, but of a local Catholic community rooted in the nineteenth century remaining in place through changing social conditions until it acquired the full form of a parish.
