Mungyeong St. Joseph Retreat Center

History & origins

The development of Mungyeong St. Joseph Healing Village began in earnest when Sa Jun-ja Magdalena, wife of Yi Bong-ju, an honorary holder of the national intangible cultural heritage tradition of brassware making, donated about 40,000 pyeong of land and buildings to the Diocese of Suwon. The donated property already included a number of buildings and a broad natural setting, as well as a large church and a brassware exhibition hall. The diocese planned to preserve this foundation while developing a place that could bring together traditional culture, the natural environment, and Christian retreat.

In 2020 the Diocese of Suwon designated Mungyeong St. Joseph Healing Village as a diocesan institution. At the time, it was presented as the third ecological village being developed by the diocese, following St. Philip Ecological Village in Pyeongchang and an ecological village project in Zambia. Plans called for the gradual creation of a memorial hall for Yi Bong-ju and a retreat house, while camping facilities would also allow people to stay in nature and participate in retreat programs. The timetable for the large retreat house was adjusted in light of the COVID-19 situation, so the original plan was not carried out unchanged, but the basic direction of linking ecology and faith was maintained.

The village later came to be listed in the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Korea directory as a retreat and prayer house of the Diocese of Suwon and in the diocesan directory as a retreat and education center. This shows how a place that began with a private donation became established as an official pastoral institution of the diocese. Its distinctive history lies in the transformation of donated cultural and spatial resources not merely into an exhibition or recreational site, but into a Church retreat setting for prayer and reflection on life in the midst of nature.
