About this place
Mosangol Catholic Church is the church building of Mosangol Parish, which belongs to the Pyeongtaek District of the First Vicariate in the Diocese of Suwon. The official Catholic Directory of Korea records Our Lady of the Rosary as its patron. In the Segyo-dong area of Pyeongtaek, the parish is a center of local Catholic life where the faithful share their faith around Mass and the sacraments and continue catechesis, prayer, fellowship, and service. The church is both a place for personal prayer and the parish’s liturgical space where important moments of life, including Baptism, Marriage, and funerals, are shared with the community.
The patronage of Our Lady of the Rosary offers an important key to understanding the parish’s spiritual character. The Rosary is one of the Catholic Church’s principal devotions, contemplating the life of Christ in the company of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and the parish patron connects this tradition of prayer and meditation with the community’s identity. Today Mosangol Church can be understood as a place within Pyeongtaek’s urban environment where Catholics gather regularly around the Word and the Eucharist and continue a communal life that links generations and families.
History & origins
Mosangol Parish was established in the Diocese of Suwon on October 1, 2004. As urban development and Catholic community life expanded in the Pyeongtaek area, the new parish began to build the foundations of its liturgical and pastoral life over an extended period. The establishment date recorded in the official Catholic Directory of Korea marks the point at which this community formally began as a parish of the Diocese of Suwon.
As the years passed, the process of providing a new church building became more concrete. According to the Diocese of Suwon, a groundbreaking Mass for the new church was celebrated on June 16, 2018. This became a turning point for a community that had grown for about fourteen years after its establishment and was now preparing a more permanent liturgical home. The project was not merely the construction of a building but the material expression of the parish’s effort to place its continuing life in a stable space for worship and pastoral activity.
After construction proceeded, a Mass marking entry into the new church was celebrated on December 15 of the same year. The Diocese of Suwon records the event as the “Mass for Entry into the New Church of Mosangol Parish.” The sequence from parish establishment in 2004 to entry into the new church in 2018 shows a community taking root as an independent parish and gradually securing its own liturgical space. The new church then became the setting for the parish’s Masses, sacraments, formation, and fellowship, and remains a clear milestone in its history.
The fact that the groundbreaking in June and entry into the new church in December both occurred in 2018 shows that the project advanced intensively within a single year. This spatial transition, about fourteen years after the parish had been established, clearly distinguishes the earlier stage of consolidating an independent community from the later stage of securing a church for long-term use. Mosangol’s history can thus be understood as a sequence in which institutional establishment was followed by the settlement of a lasting liturgical home.
