About this place

Mokgam Catholic Church is the church building of Mokgam Parish, part of the Siheung District of the Second Vicariate in the Diocese of Suwon. The official Catholic Directory of Korea records St. Francis Xavier as its patron and also notes that one mission station belongs to the parish. In the Mokgam area of Siheung, the parish is a center of local Catholic life where the faithful gather around Mass and the sacraments and continue catechesis, prayer, fellowship, and service. The connection between the parish church and its mission station shows a pastoral structure that links Catholics across a wider area rather than only those who live near the church itself.

With the missionary St. Francis Xavier as patron, Mokgam Parish connects evangelization and the proclamation of the Gospel with its communal identity. The present church is a relatively recent liturgical home, but the community worshipping there has roots that extend further back. The church is the parish center for Sunday and weekday Masses, sacramental life such as Baptism and Marriage, faith formation, and community gatherings, and it provides a stable base where Catholics can continue to gather and hand on their faith in the rapidly changing Siheung area.

History & origins

The formation of an independent Catholic community in Mokgam began in the early 1990s. According to the Korean Catholic Encyclopedia, local Catholics organized a parish-preparation committee on January 19, 1992, while a missionary priest assisted the emerging community under the pastoral care of Jangnae-dong Parish. On February 18, 1993, Mokgam was separated from Jangnae-dong and began as a quasi-parish, and on January 1, 1995 it was elevated to the status of a full parish. The current Catholic Directory of Korea records February 18, 1993 as the parish’s establishment date.

The parish expanded its foundations as the surrounding area grew. In December 2018, a Mass marked the 25th anniversary of its establishment, providing an occasion to look back on a community that had grown across generations since its beginnings as a quasi-parish. Over time, however, the old church’s setting in an industrial area and the aging condition of the building created difficulties for long-term use, and the parish moved ahead with plans to relocate and build a new church.

According to the Diocese of Suwon, a groundbreaking Mass for the new church was celebrated at the present site on February 19, 2022. The project was not simply an expansion of an existing building but a relocation of the parish’s long-term pastoral base beyond the limitations of its former surroundings. After construction, a Mass marking entry into the new church was celebrated on November 11, 2023. The diocese described the present building as having one basement level, three floors above ground, and a total floor area of about 2,382 square meters.

The sequence from preparations in 1992, the quasi-parish beginning in 1993, elevation to full parish status in 1995, and relocation to the new church in the 2020s shows a community repeatedly adapting its pastoral base to changes in the local environment. In particular, the move to the present church was a major spatial transition roughly three decades after the community’s formation and marked the beginning of a new stage in the history of Mokgam Parish.
