About this place

Mojeon-dong Catholic Church is the church building of Mojeon-dong Parish, part of the Yeoju-Icheon District of the Second Vicariate in the Diocese of Suwon. The official Catholic Directory of Korea records St. Lucia Pak Hui-sun as its patron. For Catholics in the Icheon and Baeksa-myeon area, the parish is a center of local faith where the community gathers around Mass and the sacraments and continues Scripture-based formation, catechesis, prayer, and service. In an area where urban and rural patterns of life meet, the parish helps connect different villages and families within a single Catholic community.

St. Lucia Pak Hui-sun is one of the saints associated with the Korean Catholic tradition of martyrdom, and by taking her as patron the parish links this heritage with its own communal identity. The church is more than a place for private prayer: it is the center of parish life where Baptism, Marriage, funerals, faith formation, and community gatherings take place. Visitors can therefore understand it not simply as a religious building, but as the home of a local parish in northern Icheon where Catholics continue sacramental life and care for their neighbors together.

History & origins

Mojeon-dong Parish was established in the Diocese of Suwon on January 25, 2000. According to a diocesan account prepared for the parish’s 25th anniversary, the new community began with 414 households and 1,115 faithful, and its first pastor was Fr. Seo Dong-chan. The parish brought together Catholics scattered among several communities in northern Icheon and began to build its foundations through small Christian communities and regular liturgical life.

Providing a permanent church became an important part of that development. The Diocese of Suwon’s historical chronology records the dedication of Mojeon-dong Church on October 20, 2012. The period from the parish’s initial formation to the dedication of its church reflects the process by which the community established a stable presence in the region. The church then served as the central space not only for Mass and the sacraments but also for catechesis, youth faith formation, and parish gatherings.

Over the twenty-five years after its establishment, the parish developed a culture of faith through Bible reading and Gospel transcription, pilgrimage and prayer, environmental practice, and youth activities. In its record of the 25th-anniversary Mass celebrated on September 28, 2025, the Diocese of Suwon noted that the strengthening of small communities, construction of the church, formation for different generations, and various prayer initiatives accompanied the parish’s growth. This history shows that Mojeon-dong’s development was not limited to completing a building, but involved accumulating a communal tradition that links families and villages across the region through Catholic faith.

The 25th-anniversary record, which preserves both the size of the original community and the name of the first pastor alongside later faith activities, shows that Mojeon-dong accumulated a structured communal memory within a relatively short period. By remembering not only the dedication of the church but also small communities, life with Scripture, youth formation, and environmental practice, the parish presents its growth as a process in which physical development and the maturing of Catholic life proceeded together.
