About this place

Mohyeon Catholic Church is the church building of Mohyeon Parish, part of the Cheoin District of the First Vicariate in the Diocese of Suwon. The official Catholic Directory of Korea records St. Paul the Apostle as its patron. Within the communities of Mohyeon-eup in Yongin, the parish is a center of local Catholic life where the faithful gather around Mass and the sacraments and continue catechesis, prayer, fellowship, and service to neighbors. In this mixed urban-rural area, it links families and local communities within one parish and provides a place where everyday life meets the liturgical life of the Church.

The patronage of St. Paul the Apostle gives evangelization and the proclamation of the Gospel an important place in the community’s spiritual identity. Mohyeon Church is not only a place for private prayer, but the central parish space for important moments such as Baptism, Marriage, and funerals, as well as faith formation for different generations and community gatherings. The present church follows an earlier period when the young parish celebrated Mass in temporary spaces, and it now represents the stable foundation through which Catholics in the area continue to gather and hand on their faith.

History & origins

Mohyeon Parish was established on January 25, 2000, after being separated from Yongin Parish. According to the Diocese of Suwon, the new community began with 982 households and Fr. Jeong Young-cheol as its first pastor. Although it had become an independent parish, it did not initially have a dedicated church. Mass was celebrated in temporary places such as the second floor of a commercial building and even a vinyl greenhouse. This was the formative period in which the new community maintained regular liturgical life despite limited conditions and began to establish the foundations of the parish.

The community then pursued the construction of a new church under the conviction expressed in the phrase, “Our church by our own efforts.” The diocesan archive records that, after the new building was prepared, a Mass marking entry into the church was celebrated on November 21, 2004. Moving from a series of temporary worship spaces into a church of its own was a major turning point in the parish’s history. Work continued afterward to complete the church and related facilities and to stabilize the parish’s physical foundation.

The present church was dedicated on June 22, 2008. The roughly eight-year journey from parish establishment to dedication illustrates the period in which the Mohyeon community took root as an independent parish. In January 2025, a Mass marking the parish’s 25th anniversary looked back on the path from Masses in commercial and greenhouse spaces through the building and dedication of the church. This history clearly shows a community overcoming difficult early conditions through participation and gradually creating a lasting liturgical home and parish foundation.

Because the temporary worship places and the later dates of entry and dedication are preserved together in one diocesan record, the process by which Mohyeon acquired its church can be followed with unusual clarity. The move from a commercial building and a greenhouse to a church of its own shows that the administrative creation of an independent parish still required years of communal effort before a stable physical and liturgical foundation could be secured.
