About this place

Miyang Catholic Church is a parish of the Anseong District in the First Vicariate of the Diocese of Suwon. It is the local center where Catholics in Miyang-myeon, Anseong, celebrate Mass and the sacraments and continue catechesis and community life. The Korean Catholic Directory identifies St. John Mary Vianney as the parish patron and records the presence of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Charity of Mirinae. Its official identity and present location are closely connected with the inheritance of a long-standing rural Catholic community.

To understand Miyang Catholic Church, it is helpful to look beyond the present church building and see it as a continuation of the Catholic foothold formed around Galjeon-ri. Diocesan records preserve memories of parishioners who, despite difficult circumstances, dug a well, brought in electricity, made bricks themselves, and built up spaces for the community. This background makes the parish not only a place for the liturgical life of local Catholics but also a place that preserves traces of faith cultivated through the work of several generations.

Apart from changeable information such as Mass schedules or event times, visitors can best understand the place by recognizing that it is an established parish of the Diocese of Suwon in the Anseong area and that its patronal spirituality looks to the priestly example of St. John Mary Vianney.

History & origins

The direct predecessor of Miyang Parish was the Galjeon-ri mission station. According to material prepared by the Diocese of Suwon for the parish's 50th anniversary, the Catholic community around Galjeon-ri continued as the parish and mission-station structure of the Anseong area was reorganized in 1901. After the Korean War, the number of Catholics increased, creating conditions for the mission community to grow into a parish. Parishioners gathered around the mission station on farmland and worked together to build a rectory and community facilities.

In 1959, the Galjeon-ri mission station was raised to parish status, beginning a new stage under the name Galjeon-ri Catholic Church. Even with limited means, the early community dug a well, installed electricity, made bricks by hand, and built a Sunday school building, establishing much of the parish infrastructure through its own labor. In 1968, the old Galjeon-ri church was blessed, giving the parish a settled liturgical home.

As the area and community changed, the parish prepared a new church, and the present church building was blessed in 1997. This marked an important transition in the process by which the community that had begun in Galjeon-ri became established as the parish serving Miyang. The memory of the former name and site was not erased but remained part of the parish's earlier history.

In 2009, a thanksgiving Mass was celebrated for the 50th anniversary of the parish, and a fifty-year history of Miyang Catholic Church was formally presented. The commemoration did more than mark the passage of time: it gathered together the story from the Galjeon-ri mission station to the parish and from the former church to the present one. Miyang Catholic Church today continues on the foundation of that rural Catholic community's experience of self-reliance and cooperation.
