About this place
Mirinae House of Meditation is a retreat and prayer facility of the Diocese of Suwon in the Mirinae area of Anseong, and the Clerical Society of the Most Holy Trinity of Mirinae is currently registered as the responsible religious institute. While Mirinae Shrine preserves the memory of the martyrs and of St. Andrew Kim Tae-gon, the House of Meditation provides a setting nearby where visitors can set aside a period of time and concentrate on prayer and reflection. It should be understood as a separate retreat facility, distinct from the shrine itself and from Mirinae Parish.
Retreats for individuals, families, and groups have been held here for many years. In keeping with the purpose of a Catholic retreat, the house helps people step away from ordinary life and review their lives before God, with the atmosphere of Mirinae’s martyr tradition and the prayer tradition of the religious institute forming the background. It remains listed by both the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Korea and the Diocese of Suwon as a retreat and prayer house and as a retreat and education center, making it a place whose meaning is especially clear for those seeking a more concentrated period of prayer alongside a pilgrimage to Mirinae.
History & origins
Among the publicly available records now identifiable, one of the relatively early sources describing activities at Mirinae House of Meditation is a summer-retreat notice from 2009. At that time the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Korea collected information on major retreat programs around the country, and the House of Meditation was reported as holding several overnight retreats in which parents and children participated together to foster dialogue and understanding. This record shows that by then the house was already receiving retreatants on a recurring basis.
In the summer of 2010, a “parents and children family retreat” at the same house was again publicized. The repeated appearance of family retreats across two years shows that the house was not limited to private silent prayer, but also served as a setting where family relationships could be reflected upon in faith. Its proximity to Mirinae, a place marked by the memory of martyrdom, provided a context in which such programs could be framed as times of prayer and discernment rather than simple recreation.
Today the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Korea directory identifies Mirinae House of Meditation as a retreat and prayer house of the Diocese of Suwon and names the Clerical Society of the Most Holy Trinity of Mirinae as the responsible institute. The diocese likewise lists it as a retreat and education center. Public sources do not establish with confidence the exact date of its first opening or its earliest construction history, but they do show a continuous line from family and Catholic retreats in the late 2000s to its present status as a diocesan retreat facility.
