Daughters of Mary (Marianists)

The Suwon community of the Daughters of Mary Immaculate (Marianists) is a women’s religious community located at Cheolsan Catholic Church in Gwangmyeong. The Catholic Church Directory in Korea lists it as the congregation’s “Suwon community” within the Diocese of Suwon, and the diocese likewise presents the congregation as a separate institution at Cheolsan Parish. The parish and the religious community are therefore closely connected but are not the same organization.

Marianist spirituality is rooted in the founding vision of Blessed William Joseph Chaminade and emphasizes cooperating with Christ’s saving work with Mary and forming communities of faith. The Diocese of Suwon explains that the Marianist mission gives priority to awakening faith, building Christian communities, and serving especially young people and the poor. The significance of the Cheolsan community lies in living that spirituality within the local Church.

The location of the community within Cheolsan Catholic Church shows one way Marianist religious life comes into close contact with a local parish, but the place should not be reduced to merely an auxiliary parish space. Since the diocese lists it separately as a religious-institute community, its center of identity is the community of sisters living consecrated life together. The key to understanding the site is that it remains a community with its own religious spirituality and mission while living in close relationship with the local Church.
