About this place
Mangpo-dong Catholic Church is the church building of Mangpo-dong Parish, part of the Yeongtong District of the First Vicariate in the Diocese of Suwon. The official Catholic Directory of Korea currently records St. Justin as the parish patron. Here, Catholics from Mangpo-dong and the surrounding area form a parish community, celebrate Mass and the sacraments, and continue catechesis, prayer, fellowship, and service. Distinguishing the church building from the parish community helps clarify its role: the building is the place where the community gives concrete expression to its liturgical and Christian life.
Within the urban setting of the Yeongtong area, the parish is a place where Catholics of different generations meet regularly and live their faith together. Major moments of life such as Baptism, Marriage, and funerals are shared within the Church community, while the same parish life supports the faith formation of children and young people as well as the devotional and charitable activities of adults. Visitors can best understand the church not simply as a religious building, but as the home of a Catholic parish in which sacramental and communal life continues within the local neighborhood.
History & origins
Mangpo-dong Parish was established in 2002, during a period when the Diocese of Suwon was creating several new parishes in response to rapid growth around the Yeongtong area. The current Catholic Directory of Korea gives January 29, 2002 as its date of establishment. The diocesan chronology likewise records the creation of six new parishes, including Mangpo-dong and Maetan-dong, at the beginning of that year, placing the parish’s origin within a broader reorganization prompted by the rapid urban expansion of eastern Suwon.
Soon after its establishment, the parish community began work on a new church. According to a contemporary report in the Catholic Times, a groundbreaking ceremony was held in April 2002, and the church was completed after about two years and two months of construction. The building was planned with a main worship space as well as a Eucharistic adoration room, hall, catechetical rooms, and residences for clergy and religious, allowing liturgy, prayer, education, and community activities to be carried out together on one site.
The construction process reached an important milestone with the dedication of the new church scheduled for June 19, 2004 under the diocesan bishop. The parish thus secured a permanent physical base within a relatively short period after its foundation. The church then became the setting in which a parish created amid new urban development could grow into a stable Catholic community, carrying forward the liturgical, educational, and communal framework established during its early years.
The inclusion from the outset of spaces for Eucharistic adoration, catechesis, and community gatherings shows that the new parish needed more than a hall in which to celebrate Mass. The building project was conceived as a comprehensive parish base where a newly forming urban Catholic community could sustain liturgy, formation, devotion, and fellowship in one place. That integrated purpose is a distinctive feature of the early history of Mangpo-dong Church.
