About this place

Maetan-dong Catholic Church is the church building of Maetan-dong Parish, which belongs to the Yeongtong District of the First Vicariate in the Diocese of Suwon. The official Catholic Directory of Korea currently records St. Thérèse of the Child Jesus as the parish patron. Within the residential neighborhoods of Yeongtong-gu, the parish is a local Catholic center where the faithful form a community around Mass and the sacraments and continue faith formation, prayer, fellowship, and service. The church building provides the concrete setting for the parish’s liturgy, education, and communal gatherings.

The present Maetan-dong Church is also known as a contemporary work of Catholic architecture. The Architecture & Urban Research Institute’s AURUM archive records it as a newly built religious facility with one basement level and three floors above ground, and describes an architectural approach that reinterprets religious symbolism in relation to the nearby park and residential environment. Yet its central meaning lies not in architectural recognition alone but in the parish life that continues within it. Visitors can appreciate the building while also understanding it as the place where local Catholics form a community under the patronage and spirituality of St. Thérèse.

History & origins

Maetan-dong Parish was established in 2002, during a period when the Diocese of Suwon was creating new parishes in response to population growth and urban expansion in the Yeongtong area. The official Catholic Directory of Korea gives January 29, 2002 as the date of establishment. The parish did not always have its present patron. On March 10, 2011, the Diocese of Suwon approved a change in patronage from St. Joseph the Worker to St. Thérèse of the Child Jesus, a decision made as part of an effort to avoid duplication of the same patron within the district.

The parish church itself was also renewed over time. The AURUM archive of the Architecture & Urban Research Institute records the present church as a newly constructed religious facility with one basement level, three floors above ground, and a total floor area of about 2,545 square meters, built in reinforced concrete and steel. It describes the design as a contemporary interpretation of religious symbolism using brick and granite while responding to the nearby Maehwa Neighborhood Park and surrounding residential environment.

In 2017, the building received a Special Award in the non-residential category of the 22nd Gyeonggi Architecture Culture Awards. The recognition of the present church as a contemporary architectural work roughly fifteen years after the parish’s establishment reflects the way the community reshaped its worship space amid continuing urban change. The sequence of parish establishment in 2002, the change of patron in 2011, and the architectural recognition of the current church in 2017 shows a community refining its institutional, spiritual, and physical identity over time.

The fact that the present church is documented in a public architectural archive as a distinct new work also provides independent evidence of the parish’s spatial transformation. Its recognition for interpreting religious symbolism in relation to a nearby park and residential setting shows that the new church project responded not only to internal parish needs but also to the changed urban landscape around it.
