About this place

Maegyo-dong Catholic Church is the church building of Maegyo-dong Parish, which belongs to the Paldal-Jangan District of the First Vicariate in the Diocese of Suwon. The official Catholic Directory of Korea currently lists St. Andrew Kim Taegon as the parish patron. Located in one of Suwon’s long-established urban neighborhoods, the parish is a local Catholic center where the faithful celebrate Mass and the sacraments and continue Scripture-based formation, catechesis, devotional life, and service. The church is not merely a venue for ceremonies but a place where generations of parish life are connected.

The patronage of St. Andrew Kim Taegon links the identity of the parish with the tradition of martyr faith in the Catholic Church in Korea. Within the parish, Catholics share not only personal devotional life but also major moments such as Baptism, Marriage, and funerals, while children, young people, and adults participate in formation, prayer, and service. Maegyo-dong Church can therefore be understood not simply as a religious building in central Suwon, but as the central place where sacramental life, memory, and community experience have accumulated over time.

History & origins

Discussion about establishing Maegyo-dong Parish became concrete in January 1981 within the pastoral council of Buksu-dong Parish. Because Buksu-dong was experiencing rapid growth and covered a wide territory, the need for division had become increasingly clear. Diocesan deliberation followed in February, and the boundaries of the new parish were announced in April. A church construction committee was then formed and work began in June. The Korean Catholic Encyclopedia records formal notification of the parish’s establishment on August 1, while the current Catholic Directory of Korea gives August 21 as the establishment date. These records can be understood as reflecting different administrative and on-site stages in the parish’s inauguration.

In the early period, the basement of the priest’s residence was used as a temporary church while construction proceeded in stages. Beginning in November 1981, several phases of building work followed, eventually producing a church with one basement level and two floors above ground. The completed church was dedicated on June 14, 1985. Relics of St. Andrew Kim Taegon were placed in the altar, an element that is closely connected with the parish’s present identity under his patronage.

As the parish grew, it also gave rise to new communities. Historical records state that Byeongjeom Parish was separated from Maegyo-dong in 1985 and Gwonseon-dong Parish in 1987. In the 1990s, prayer and fundraising efforts were undertaken to address the aging building and problems with auxiliary facilities, followed by further construction and land acquisition in 1996. This sequence shows that Maegyo-dong was not a parish completed in a single building project, but a community that continued to expand, divide, and adapt in response to changes in Catholic life in central Suwon.

The fact that church construction and the later division of new parishes followed soon after the foundation of Maegyo-dong also shows how rapidly changing population and Catholic demographics in central Suwon were reflected in parish structures. Its history is therefore not only the growth story of one local community, but also part of the process by which new neighboring parishes emerged.
