About this place
Maegok Catholic Church is the church building of Maegok Parish, which belongs to the Anyang 2 District of the Second Vicariate in the Diocese of Suwon. The official Catholic Directory of Korea records St. Anthony of Padua as the parish patron. Located in a residential area of Anyang, the parish serves as a local center where Catholics live their faith together through Mass and the sacraments and continue catechesis, prayer, fellowship, and service. The church is both the liturgical place where the community gathers and a practical base for the wider life of the parish.
The present significance of Maegok Parish lies less in the size of its building than in the way the community uses the place. Liturgical life is connected with faith formation for children, young people, and adults, as well as devotional activities, service, and fellowship across generations. The patronage of St. Anthony of Padua also expresses part of the community’s Catholic identity. Visitors can therefore understand Maegok Church not merely as a religious facility in Anyang, but as the home of a Catholic parish where sacramental life, the Word, and communal faith are continuously shared.
History & origins
Maegok Parish was established on September 30, 2003 after being separated from Bisan-dong Parish. The parish’s official chronology records that about 3,800 Catholics became part of the new community at the time of its establishment. The change took place amid the urbanization of Anyang and the growth of the Catholic population, which required existing pastoral territories to be divided and new parish communities to be formed. From its early years, the community worked to establish the liturgical and pastoral foundations of an independent parish while also preparing for a permanent church.
Plans for the new church became concrete in the mid-2000s. In June 2006, the Diocese of Suwon issued a public tender for construction of Maegok Church, describing a building on the Bisan 3-dong site with two basement levels, four floors above ground, and a total floor area of about 3,793 square meters. The project was intended to create a long-term base not only for worship but also for catechesis, meetings, and community life. The parish chronology later records the dedication of the church on November 7, 2010.
After the church had become established, the facilities continued to be adapted to the needs of the community. The official parish history records a remodeling project in June 2015. The sequence of parish foundation in 2003, the construction effort of the 2000s, the 2010 dedication, and later renovation shows how Maegok developed from a newly created parish into a community with a stable physical home. The present church thus embodies the stages through which the parish grew and settled within the Anyang area.
The construction plan made public in 2006 and the dedication recorded in 2010 also show that the new church was a multi-year project rather than a single event. The remodeling carried out in 2015 further indicates that the parish did not treat the building as a fixed, finished space, but continued to adapt its facilities to the needs of the actual community. These successive stages provide a clear record of how the parish’s physical setting changed together with its growth.
