About this place

Mado Catholic Church is the parish church serving the Mado-myeon area of Hwaseong within the Hwaseong District of the First Vicariate of the Diocese of Suwon. The Catholic Church Directory in Korea classifies the community as a parish and records St. Faustina as its patron saint. It is therefore not simply a religious building, but the central place where local Catholics gather for Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and parish community life.

The Mado area is made up of a number of communities spread across a broad rural locality, and the parish serves as a Catholic pastoral center that gathers dispersed faithful into one community of faith. Its patronage under St. Faustina also forms a shared spiritual marker of parish identity. When visiting, it is more accurate to understand “Mado Catholic Church” not merely as the name of a building but as the name of an officially established parish community of the Diocese of Suwon.

Its status as a parish is the most important feature distinguishing Mado Catholic Church from nearby chapels or religious-institute facilities. A parish is a stable community entrusted with the pastoral care of the faithful of a defined area within the diocesan structure, so the significance of Mado lies not only in its building but in the liturgical and sacramental life, faith formation, and communal fellowship carried on there. For Catholics visiting the area, it provides a clear ecclesial point of contact with the Catholic community of western Hwaseong.

History & origins

Preparations for a church in the Mado area began before the parish itself was established. According to Diocese of Suwon records, the mother parish of Namyang purchased land in Dugok-ri, Mado-myeon, in March 1982 for the construction of a new church. In May 1998, that property was sold and the present site in Seokgyo-ri was purchased. In other words, a site for an independent church serving the local Catholic community had been prepared over a long period.

The Diocese of Suwon erected Mado Parish on August 30, 2011. The official notice listed the church site and a temporary chapel in Seokgyo-ri separately, showing that the new parish community began its life first and then continued preparing for a permanent church. The erection of the parish marked the organization of Catholics in a number of Mado-area villages into an independent pastoral unit.

Plans for the new church became concrete in September 2015, when designs and contractors were invited and selected, and the groundbreaking ceremony was held on June 10, 2017. The project at the time called for both a church building and an education building. The sequence confirmed by official sources shows a gradual development over several decades: acquiring land for a church, establishing the parish, and then constructing a permanent parish complex.

When the parish was erected, the diocese defined its jurisdiction as the Mado-myeon villages of Gomo-ri, Geumdang-ri, Dugok-ri, Seokgyo-ri, Songjeong-ri, Seulhang-ri, Ssangsong-ri, and Cheongwon-ri. This shows that Mado began not as a church for a single village but as an independent pastoral unit embracing several communities. At the 2017 groundbreaking, the plan called for separate church and education buildings on a 3,756-square-meter site, with a three-story education building containing offices, catechetical rooms, and the priest's residence. The diocesan article also gave an expected completion date, but a projected date is not the same as a verified completion, so this history includes only the confirmed groundbreaking and construction plan.
