About this place
Jungang Catholic Church is the central parish of the Anyang 1 District in the Second Vicariate of the Diocese of Suwon and has the Immaculate Heart of Mary as its patron. Long a focal point of Catholic life in central Anyang, it continues to support the faith of local Catholics through Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and community activities for different generations. Because it has served as a mother parish from which numerous other parishes were formed, it can also be understood in connection with the development of Catholic communities throughout Anyang, Gunpo, and Uiwang.
The present church is a large complex that combines liturgical spaces with areas for education and fellowship and is known as a work of modern architecture with a distinctive roof and interior structure. The parish has a long tradition of relating to the wider community through educational and cultural activities rather than remaining confined to the church building itself. Its history of honoring the martyrs and fostering priestly and religious vocations also gives it significance as a place that preserves the memory of the local Church. Visitors can therefore encounter not only a functioning parish today but also one of the central points from which Catholic community life expanded across the Anyang area.
History & origins
Jungang Parish was established on September 7, 1954, when it was separated from Hauhyeon Parish under the name Anyang Jungang Parish. The community began in a wooden building of about 24 pyeong. In 1956 it opened Anyang Kindergarten, the first kindergarten in the Anyang area, bringing together faith formation and local education. Ground was broken for a new church in July 1957, and the church was blessed on August 20, 1958, giving the parish a more stable foundation.
As the city grew, Jungang Parish repeatedly gave rise to new parishes. Hogye-dong Parish was separated in 1975, followed by Myeonghak and Bisan-dong Parishes in 1978 and Seoksu-dong Parish in 1983. Those parishes later gave rise to still more communities, broadening the network of Catholic parishes across Anyang, Gunpo, and Uiwang. The parish name itself also changed: it became Jangnae-dong in 1980 and was changed back to Jungang on September 12, 1995.
Construction of the present church began in 1993 and continued through a long building process until its dedication on October 2, 2004. Designed by architect Kim Young-seop, the church uses diagonal lines and curved surfaces to respond to the constraints of the site and received an Anyang architectural culture award. In addition to liturgical spaces, the complex includes facilities for education and cultural activities.
In 2024, the parish celebrated its seventieth anniversary with a commemorative Mass. The Diocese of Suwon described Jungang Parish as a cornerstone of evangelization in the region, a role continued through the many daughter parishes and vocations that emerged from it. Its journey from a small wooden church to a mother parish with a new church complex reflects the expansion of the Catholic community alongside the urban growth of Anyang. The early educational work, repeated parish divisions, changes of name, and construction of a new church also show how its pastoral reach and physical setting were repeatedly adapted to changes in the surrounding region.
