About this place

Jowon-dong Cathedral is a co-cathedral of the Diocese of Suwon and shares the diocese’s cathedral liturgy with Jeongja-dong Cathedral. It is also the church of Jowon-dong Parish and is dedicated to the Queen of Peace. The Queen of Peace was proclaimed not only the patroness of the church but also the patroness of the entire Diocese of Suwon, giving this cathedral a distinctive place in the diocese’s Marian devotion and liturgical tradition.

The diocese has long observed the feast of the Queen of Peace in a special way at this cathedral, and liturgies bringing together the diocesan bishop and the faithful have continued to be celebrated here. At the same time it remains the parish church for Catholics of Jowon-dong, serving their Masses, sacraments, catechesis, and small-community life. Jowon-dong Cathedral is therefore a place where the daily life of a local parish overlaps with the historical and liturgical memory of the Diocese of Suwon as a whole. In particular, the July 9 feast of the Queen of Peace carries a double meaning: it is the patronal feast of the cathedral and a celebration of the patroness of the Diocese of Suwon. This liturgical tradition means that Jowon-dong Cathedral is connected not only to the institutional status of a co-cathedral but directly to the diocese’s historical devotion to Mary under the title Queen of Peace.

History & origins

Jowon-dong Parish was established on November 19, 1976, during a period of rapid growth in the Diocese of Suwon. Under Bishop Angelo Kim Nam-su, the diocese pursued the construction of a new central church, and at Jowon-dong a building was created to serve both as a parish church and as a new cathedral representing the diocese. The project responded to the growing number of Catholics and expanding pastoral needs of the time.

The new church was consecrated on May 18, 1977, and on July 9 of the same year it was elevated as the Cathedral of the Queen of Peace. In connection with this change, the Queen of Peace was officially proclaimed patroness of the entire Diocese of Suwon. The July 9 feast of the Queen of Peace subsequently developed into a diocesan liturgical tradition centered on Jowon-dong Cathedral.

In 1997, when Jeongja-dong Church received Holy See approval as a cathedral, the Diocese of Suwon adopted a system in which Jeongja-dong and Jowon-dong share cathedral functions. Jowon-dong continued as a co-cathedral with its own historical role, while retaining its distinctive connection with the diocesan patroness, the Queen of Peace.

At the fiftieth-anniversary Mass for the parish in 2026, the diocese described Jowon-dong Cathedral Parish as having played a major part in the diocese’s development over the previous half-century. Its history therefore extends beyond the founding of a local parish: it encapsulates the wider diocesan process of building a new cathedral during a period of growth and later developing a shared co-cathedral structure. The creation of Jeongja-dong Cathedral did not end Jowon-dong’s role. The two cathedrals continued to share the diocese’s central liturgical functions while retaining different historical backgrounds, and diocesan liturgy connected with the Queen of Peace continued especially at Jowon-dong. The 2026 fiftieth-anniversary record evaluates the Jowon-dong community together with the development of the diocese precisely because the histories of the parish and the cathedral had been intertwined from the beginning. Its half-century history therefore contains both the story of a local parish and the changing cathedral structure of the Diocese of Suwon.
