About this place
Joam Catholic Church is the church of Joam Parish in the Hwaseong District of the First Vicariate of the Diocese of Suwon. Dedicated to Saints Peter and Paul the Apostles, it is the local center where Catholics in Joam, Ujeong-eup, Hwaseong, and surrounding rural communities gather for Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and parish life. Drawing on a rural parish tradition that once embraced numerous mission stations, it has long connected Catholics spread across a broad area into one parish community.
Now more than half a century old, Joam Parish remembers both local evangelization and vocations that have emerged from the community. The Diocese of Suwon’s fiftieth-anniversary account also records that the parish has produced a number of priests. Today Joam Catholic Church is therefore not simply an old local church building but the center of a community that grew from mission-based rural pastoral care into an independent parish and continues its liturgy, faith formation, and service to neighbors. One feature of Joam Parish highlighted in its fiftieth-anniversary records is a tradition of generosity and vocations that reaches beyond the immediate parish boundary. In preparing for the jubilee, the community combined prayer with assistance to neighbors, and over five decades a number of priestly vocations emerged from the parish. These records show that Joam Catholic Church has served not only as a liturgical center for a rural area but also as a base from which faith is handed on to the next generation and shared with neighbors.
History & origins
Preparations for an independent parish in the Joam area became concrete in January 1966, when Balan Parish organized a committee to build a Catholic church in Joam. Joam was not yet an independent parish, but local Catholics began preparing the material and communal foundations needed for a church and a future parish.
On the basis of that preparation, Joam Parish was established on January 5, 1973. According to the Diocese of Suwon’s fiftieth-anniversary record, the new parish began with 187 households and 986 Catholics. Other diocesan records note that it was responsible for numerous mission stations, reflecting its character as a parish serving a broad rural region.
Joam Parish continued to grow while sustaining Catholic life in Ujeong-eup and neighboring areas, and in 2023 it celebrated the fiftieth anniversary of its establishment. The record that several priestly vocations have arisen from the parish over those decades also shows that the community has participated not only in liturgy and local pastoral care but in nurturing vocations.
The history of Joam Catholic Church is therefore not simply the gradual elevation of a local mission station into a parish. It is the story of a mother parish and local Catholics deliberately preparing an independent church and parish, which then grew while caring for a wide rural community. The building preparations of the 1960s and the parish establishment of 1973 were the decisive turning points in forming today’s Joam Parish. A second diocesan account of the fiftieth anniversary states that Joam Parish was responsible for twenty-one mission stations at the time of its establishment. The creation of the parish in 1973 was therefore more than the independence of a church in one village; it established a new pastoral center linking numerous rural mission communities. Preparations for the fiftieth anniversary, begun in 2022, combined the offering of rosary prayers with fundraising for neighbors in need, and these efforts were presented at the 2023 commemorative Mass. Half a century later, this provides a later expression of how the parish’s early mission-station ministry developed into broader local evangelization and sharing.
