About this place
Jeomdong Catholic Church is the church of Jeomdong Parish in the Yeoju–Icheon District of the Second Vicariate of the Diocese of Suwon. The parish is dedicated to St. Thérèse of the Child Jesus and serves Catholics scattered across the rural area of Jeomdong-myeon in Yeoju, bringing them together through Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and prayer. Unlike an urban parish concentrated in a dense neighborhood, it has the distinct character of a rural parish whose members maintain community across a broad living area.
The Diocese of Suwon has described Jeomdong as a place whose natural environment lends itself to prayer and as an area where Catholic life is also present through nearby religious communities. The parish has sustained its faith less through sheer size than through close relationships and small-community bonds. Its church therefore functions not only as the place for Sunday liturgy but also as a community space where local Catholics care for one another and hand on the faith. At the parish’s twenty-fifth-anniversary Mass in 2017, the diocesan bishop pointed to Jeomdong’s natural setting and nearby religious communities, describing the area as meaningful for prayer and Christian life. This setting gives Jeomdong Catholic Church a character beyond that of a neighborhood parish alone: it is also a place where liturgy and prayer can be practiced with particular attentiveness in a quiet rural environment.
History & origins
The Catholic community in Jeomdong began to take root as a mission-station community in the 1960s. According to the Diocese of Suwon’s record for the parish’s twenty-fifth anniversary, by 1976 the community was organized as Cheongan-ri Mission Station under Yeoju Parish. The site for worship, secured through the sacrifices and savings of Catholics during the mission-station period, later became a foundation for the growth of the parish.
On August 18, 1992, Cheongan-ri Mission Station was raised to the status of a quasi-parish and renamed “Jeomdong Parish.” The current Korean Catholic directory also records this date as the parish’s official establishment date. The diocesan twenty-fifth-anniversary account further explains that Jeomdong was raised to full parish status in 1995, showing a gradual development from mission station to quasi-parish and finally to parish.
The parish continued its life of faith under the conditions of a small rural community. In 2017, for the twenty-fifth anniversary counted from the 1992 establishment date, parishioners offered handwritten copies of Scripture and rosary prayers and celebrated a commemorative Mass. The history of Jeomdong Catholic Church is therefore less a story of rapid growth through urban development than one of Catholics who began as a mission community and, over many years, sustained their place of worship and matured into an independent parish. In preparation for the twenty-fifth anniversary in 2017, parishioners copied Scripture by hand and offered 100,000 decades of the rosary, and a commemorative plaque was prepared for the anniversary Mass. These acts show that the community remembers the 1992 elevation to quasi-parish status as an important point of departure. At the same time, the anniversary record looks further back to the mission community of the 1960s and the 1976 Cheongan-ri Mission Station, making clear that Jeomdong’s history began in a local Catholic community older than its administrative establishment date. The memory that lay Catholics secured the church site during the mission period also highlights the important role of the faithful in the community’s growth toward an independent parish.
