Little Jesus Sisters

About this place

The Seongnam Community of the Sisters of Little Jesus is identified in the Guide to the Catholic Church in Korea as a women's institute of consecrated life within the Diocese of Suwon. Its present designation is “Sisters of Little Jesus, Seongnam Community,” and its basic identity is not that of a parish church but of a local religious community where sisters live and pray together. The English name in the Catholic directory, “Sisters of Little Jesus in Seongnam,” likewise distinguishes this as a specific Seongnam community. It should therefore not be confused with the congregation’s motherhouse or its other communities, but understood precisely as the Seongnam branch within the territory of the Diocese of Suwon.

The Sisters of Little Jesus began from a vocation to make it possible for persons with and without disabilities to share religious life together. The congregation has made it an important apostolate to safeguard the dignity of the smallest and most marginalized in the Gospel and to live as one community beyond distinctions of disability. The Seongnam Community belongs within this wider spirituality, and visitors should understand it as a religious community and one of the congregation's apostolic bases rather than as a parish. The congregation’s founding inspiration was to avoid excluding a vocation to religious life simply because of disability and to witness to the Kingdom of God together. That background helps explain the Seongnam Community not as a residence or administrative office alone, but as a religious community in which common life itself expresses Gospel inclusion.
