About this place
Ipbuk-dong Catholic Church is the church of Ipbuk-dong Parish in the First Vicariate of the Diocese of Suwon and has Saint John the Apostle as its patron. It is the parish where Catholics in the Ipbuk-dong area of Gwonseon-gu, Suwon, celebrate Mass and the sacraments and participate in catechesis and community activities. The parish was established by separation from Yuljeon-dong Parish as the local residential area expanded. Official records preserve the transition from the temporary church to the construction of the present building in unusual detail, making the current church directly connected with the growth of the newly formed community. Visitors should understand it not as an ancient historic church but as a local parish formed in the 2010s that established itself quickly.
The present church is a permanent building created by the parish community after the early period in a temporary commercial-space chapel. It contains Catholic devotional and liturgical signs including an image of its patron, the Stations of the Cross, and a Marian statue, together with catechetical and meeting rooms. The rapid movement from a temporary space to an independent church is itself an important feature of how the Ipbuk-dong community was formed and became established. With the main worship space on the third floor, choir seating above it, and offices, catechetical rooms, and meeting spaces elsewhere in the building, the church illustrates the integrated liturgical, educational, and communal functions of a modern parish.
History & origins
Ipbuk-dong Parish was established on December 16, 2014, after being separated from Yuljeon-dong Parish. At first, the parish used one floor of a commercial building in Ipbuk-dong as a temporary church. In 2015 the diocese approved Saint John the Apostle as the parish patron and adjusted the parish's district affiliation. Securing a stable permanent church was one of the major tasks while the new parish established itself as an independent community. Diocesan records from the same period also note an adjustment of the parish’s district affiliation, showing that the new parish was being situated within the diocesan pastoral structure as well as building its own local community.
After the groundbreaking for the new church on March 18, 2017, construction proceeded, and the entrance Mass was celebrated on April 28, 2018. The new building provided not only the worship space but also catechetical rooms, meeting rooms, and administrative facilities needed for parish life, bringing the period in a temporary commercial-space chapel to an end. Building work was completed in February 2018, and the entrance Mass two months later marked the community’s actual move into the new space. Images of the patron, the Stations of the Cross, and a Marian statue gave visible form to the new parish’s liturgical identity within the building.
After moving in, the community continued preparing for the formal dedication, which was celebrated on October 15, 2022. In 2024 the parish marked the tenth anniversary of its establishment. The clear sequence from establishment through groundbreaking, entrance, and dedication shows how a newly founded parish built both its community and physical foundation step by step within a relatively short period. The several-year interval between entrance and dedication also shows that beginning to use the building and formally dedicating the church liturgically were distinct stages. The chronology through the tenth anniversary makes clear that establishing a new parish was not completed by a single building event but unfolded step by step.
