About this place
Ingye-dong Catholic Church is the church of Ingye-dong Parish in the First Vicariate of the Diocese of Suwon, serving Catholics in and around Ingye-dong, Paldal-gu, Suwon, as a community centered on Mass and the sacraments. The parish has Mary Help of Christians as its patron and was established as an independent community through the division of parishes in urban Suwon. As an ordinary urban parish, the church is a center for Sunday and weekday liturgy, preparation for sacraments such as baptism and marriage, catechesis, and parish gatherings. Devotion to its Marian patron is best understood not as a tourist feature but as an internal spiritual tradition through which the community expresses its Catholic identity.
Since its establishment, the parish has continued to give an important place to Marian devotion and communal prayer. For its twenty-fifth anniversary, the community blessed a statue of its patron, offered the Rosary together, and prepared commemorative materials recording its past. These practices show that Ingye-dong is both an everyday place of liturgy for local Catholics and a place where the community preserves its memory and hands on its faith to the next generation. The decision to record the first twenty-five years in video and book form also shows a relatively young parish consciously preserving and handing on a history that has already become substantial.
History & origins
Ingye-dong Parish was established in 1997 after being separated from Gwonseon-dong Parish. Once the new community was established, it worked toward a permanent church and dedicated the new building in May 2000. The parish has commemorated its establishment on May 24, a date connected with the feast of its patron. Dedicating an independent church only a few years after the parish was established meant that the new community obtained a permanent physical base relatively quickly. The parish then continued to organize its common life around this church amid changes in urban Suwon.
On May 29, 2022, the parish celebrated a Mass for its twenty-fifth anniversary. The community reviewed its twenty-five-year history through a commemorative video and booklet and offered 250,000 decades of the Rosary. Before the Mass, a statue of Mary Help of Christians was blessed, providing another occasion to reaffirm the parish's devotion to its patron. The first pastor, former pastors, and parishioners took part in the anniversary, bringing the founding generation and the present community together around a shared memory of the parish. Coming after the COVID-19 period, the anniversary was also treated as an occasion to renew ordinary parish faith life.
The sequence from separation from Gwonseon-dong, through the dedication of a new church, to the gathering of the community's memories and prayers for the twenty-fifth anniversary shows how Ingye-dong Parish became established as a new parish alongside the growth of urban Suwon. As nearly a generation had passed between the dedication of the church and the twenty-fifth anniversary, passing the experience of the early parishioners on to younger generations became an important part of the commemoration.
