About this place

Ilwol Catholic Church is the church of Ilwol Parish in the First Vicariate of the Diocese of Suwon and has Saint Vincent de Paul as its patron. It is the parish where Catholics in the Ilwol area of Jangan-gu, Suwon, continue their life of faith through Mass, the sacraments, prayer, and community activities, and over the span of a generation it has become a stable base for Catholic life in the neighborhood. The patron saint’s name provides a natural background for understanding a parish spirituality that values charity and service to neighbors in need. At the official twenty-fifth anniversary Mass, the community was also encouraged to grow as one that brings the Lord’s love into the local area, showing an awareness of both liturgical life and responsibility toward its surroundings.

The parish began when the surrounding area was still relatively undeveloped, but the community built both a church and its common life over time. For its twenty-fifth anniversary, it gathered photographs of its past and renewed its emphasis on Scripture, prayer, and sharing. In this sense Ilwol Catholic Church is a place that preserves the memory of a local parish while connecting that memory with present faith through the Word of God and love of neighbor. The photo exhibition and communal events also served not merely to celebrate the past but to share the memories of the founding generation with younger parishioners.

History & origins

Ilwol Parish was established on January 30, 2001, after being separated from Yuljeon-dong Parish. The new community began when the area around Ilwol Reservoir was still relatively undeveloped, and parishioners worked both to organize the parish and to secure a permanent church of their own. The twenty-fifth anniversary account recalls that the area initially had little infrastructure, with the reservoir and open land still prominent. The parish’s early history therefore involved more than an administrative separation: parishioners had to create both a real place of worship and the structures of community life from the ground up.

As the community grew, construction of the church proceeded, and the new church was dedicated in 2011. The parish then continued to strengthen both its facilities and community life through activities promoting active faith and unity. In the period leading up to the twenty-fifth anniversary, parishioners also undertook communal practices such as the Way of the Cross and pilgrimages to Catholic shrines. After construction, the parish also went through a period of settling construction debt and later renovating the church, continuing to strengthen its material foundation. If the first task of a new parish was to build a church, the next was to sustain that space and deepen the unity of the community using it.

On January 25, 2026, the parish celebrated its twenty-fifth anniversary Mass. Rather than treating the anniversary only as a ceremony, the community reviewed its twenty-five years through a photo exhibition and renewed its commitment to Scripture, prayer, and sharing. The path from a small community separated from Yuljeon-dong Parish to a parish with its own church and a silver jubilee reflects the period in which Ilwol Parish took root alongside the growth of the surrounding urban area. Plans for lectures, pilgrimages, and fellowship events during the jubilee year likewise attempted to connect the parish’s history with renewed community life. The silver jubilee was therefore treated less as an endpoint than as a transition toward the parish’s next generation.
