About this place

Ihyeon Catholic Church is the church of Ihyeon Parish in the Suji District of the First Vicariate of the Diocese of Suwon. The parish was formed by separation from Suji Parish and has Saint John the Baptist as its patron. Serving a residential area of Giheung-gu in Yongin, it is a parish where Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and community activities are carried out, and it has become an independent parish community within a relatively short time since its establishment. The official tenth-anniversary record clearly identifies its mother parish and patron, making its identity as an independent parish within the Suji District unambiguous. Unlike a shrine or monastery, its primary role is the ordinary pastoral life of local parishioners, which is the first point a visitor should understand.

Since its founding, securing a permanent church has been one of the community's important concerns. Diocesan records preserve the groundbreaking for a new church, the tenth-anniversary Mass, and a continuing prayer campaign for church construction. This history shows that Ihyeon is more than a church building: it is a community in which parishioners have worked together to establish the parish's foundations and prepare a place of faith for future generations. The name of its patron, Saint John the Baptist, and the long communal prayer for the church-building effort also show how the parish has treated the creation of a worship space as part of its growth in faith.

History & origins

Ihyeon Parish was established on June 25, 2013, after being separated from Suji Parish. The new parish began as an independent pastoral community for Catholics in the Ihyeon area of Giheung-gu, Yongin. In its early years, organizing the community and securing a church for long-term use remained major tasks. The official tenth-anniversary record explicitly names Suji as the mother parish, confirming that the new community emerged as pastoral needs grew in the area. Becoming an independent parish meant not only an administrative division but also beginning to build its own structures for liturgy, formation, and community life.

The church-building project entered a concrete stage with the groundbreaking Mass at the present site on June 23, 2018. Bishop Lino Lee Seong-hyo, then vicar general, presided, and the celebration emphasized continuing the building effort through communion, communication, and prayer. The diocese also linked the site with the memory of the martyrs' faith, presenting the construction of the church as part of handing on that faith. At the groundbreaking, the diocese emphasized the communion and communication of parishioners as foundations for the project. This shows that the building effort was understood not merely as an expansion of facilities but as a long communal process of participation and renewal in faith.

On June 25, 2023, the parish celebrated the tenth anniversary of its establishment. After the Mass, a sign was unveiled marking the offering of five million decades of prayer for the church-building project, again highlighting the continuing journey and prayer that had accompanied the effort. Ihyeon Parish's first decade can therefore be understood as the period in which a new community separated from Suji Parish worked to establish its own pastoral foundation and liturgical space. The public official articles do not, however, provide enough evidence to fix a final completion or dedication date for the present church, so later construction chronology is not inferred here. What can be stated with confidence is the long period of prayer and preparation through which the community sought a permanent church after its establishment.
