About this place

Hwaseo-dong Catholic Church is the church of Hwaseo-dong Parish in the Paldal–Jangan District of the First Vicariate of the Diocese of Suwon. It is the local parish where Catholics in the Hwaseo-dong area of Paldal-gu, Suwon, celebrate Mass and the sacraments and continue catechesis and community activities. Its patronal title is “Mother of Heavenly Grace.” The Catholic Directory of Korea also records the apostolic presence of the Mirinae Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Mary, showing that religious sisters share in the life of the parish community.

The present church was newly prepared as the long-established parish replaced an aging former church. In addition to the liturgical space, the new complex includes facilities for education and gatherings, supporting not only Mass and the sacraments but also formation and fellowship among parishioners. Hwaseo-dong Catholic Church can therefore be understood as a place where a long-standing urban parish in Suwon responded to changing conditions and safety needs while continuing to serve as a center of local Catholic life.

History & origins

According to the Catholic Directory of Korea, Hwaseo-dong Parish was established on November 9, 1978. A diocesan report on the construction of the new church states that the former parish church was completed in two stages, first in November 1978 and again in November 1980. That building served for many years as the center of parish life, but as time passed, structural safety became an important concern for the community.

Diocesan records explain that three safety inspections conducted through 2014 identified a risk of accidents, leading the parish to use the former credit-union building as a temporary church from January 2015. While preparing for a new church, the community combined fundraising with a rosary campaign and other spiritual efforts. On October 1, 2017, the diocesan bishop presided at the Mass and ceremony marking the groundbreaking of the new church. This was a decisive transition from maintaining an aging building to creating new spaces for worship, formation, and parish life.

After roughly two years of construction, Hwaseo-dong Parish moved into the new church in August 2019. The Catholic Times reported that an entrance Mass was celebrated on August 15 with the vicar general presiding and that the new complex included the church as well as offices, a dining area, classrooms, and meeting spaces. The history of Hwaseo-dong’s church buildings thus runs from the first church of the late 1970s, through a period of aging facilities and temporary worship, to the construction and occupation of a new parish complex shaped by the changing needs of the community.
