About this place
Hopyeong Catholic Church is the church of Hopyeong Parish in the Anyang 1 District of the Second Vicariate of the Diocese of Suwon. Its name can easily be mistaken for a location in Hopyeong-dong, Namyangju, but the official Catholic directory places this parish in Dongan-gu, Anyang. It is a territorial parish where local Catholics celebrate Mass and the sacraments and continue catechesis and community activities. Its patron is Mary, Mother of God, and sisters of the Mirinae Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Mary also share in the parish apostolate.
Hopyeong Parish took shape during a period in which urban growth and the division of parishes continued across the Anyang area. Today it serves the ordinary life of faith of local Catholics as one of the parishes of the Anyang 1 District. Once its actual location and jurisdiction are made clear, its identity is best understood not from the name “Hopyeong” alone but as part of the Catholic community of Anyang. Visitors can therefore understand it as a Diocese of Suwon parish in Anyang under the patronage of Mary, Mother of God.
History & origins
Hopyeong Parish was established in the late 1990s, when the parish network in the Anyang area was being divided into more localized communities. The Catholic Directory of Korea records February 14, 1997, as the date of establishment. The Diocese of Suwon’s history of Jungang Parish shows that from the 1970s onward, Jungang Parish and communities separated from it gave rise to further parishes, expanding the parish network across Anyang, Gunpo, and Uiwang; Hopyeong Parish belongs within this broader genealogy of local Church growth.
The available official sources do not provide a sufficiently detailed public chronology of Hopyeong Parish’s early temporary worship space or the construction of its present church. It is therefore safer to center the history on the verified establishment date and the wider background of parish development in the Anyang area rather than add an unverified construction date or mother parish. The parish subsequently took root as a local community within the Anyang 1 District.
The official historical chronology of the Diocese of Suwon records a Mass for the twenty-fifth anniversary of Hopyeong Parish on February 12, 2022. This provides a verifiable milestone showing that the community founded in 1997 had continued for nearly a generation as an established local parish. Although the detailed building chronology is not stated because of limitations in the public sources, the establishment and the twenty-fifth anniversary clearly mark the continuity of Hopyeong Parish within the growth of the Church in the Anyang area.
