About this place

Homaesil-dong Catholic Church is the church of Homaesil-dong Parish in the Gwonseon District of the First Vicariate of the Diocese of Suwon. It serves Catholics in the Homaesil area of Gwonseon-gu, Suwon, as a local parish for Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and community life. Its patron is St. Raphael the Archangel. The Catholic Directory of Korea lists Chilbo Parish as its mother parish, confirming that Homaesil-dong became an independent community as the Homaesil residential area grew.

The parish is significant as an example of a Catholic community taking root in a relatively newly developed residential area and preparing a new church together. Diocesan records preserve the sequence after the parish was established: Mass was first celebrated on the future church site, construction was begun, and the community eventually moved into the new church. Homaesil-dong Catholic Church is therefore the place where a newly formed parish gained a stable center for liturgy, catechesis, fellowship, and the continuing faith life of the neighborhood.

History & origins

Homaesil-dong Parish was created as the Homaesil residential area in western Suwon was growing. The Catholic Directory of Korea records December 15, 2015, as its establishment date, and a diocesan report on the groundbreaking likewise states that the community began that month after being separated from Chilbo Parish. Because an independent church building had not yet been completed, the new parish had to organize its pastoral territory while also working to secure a permanent place of worship.

Construction followed quickly after the parish was established. According to diocesan records, the first Mass on the future church site was celebrated on June 19, 2016, and the groundbreaking for the new church took place on September 10 of the same year. With development still underway around the site, the community had to shoulder both construction and fundraising, and it also visited other parishes in the diocese to seek support for the new church.

On August 15, 2017, the first Mass was celebrated in the new church, and on September 23 an entrance Mass was celebrated with the vicar general presiding. In less than two years from its establishment, the parish had secured the basic space for its independent life. This chronology shows how Homaesil-dong Parish began as a new community separated from Chilbo Parish and, alongside the growth of a new residential district, established its own home for liturgy and community life.
