About this place
Hogye-dong Catholic Church is the church of Hogye-dong Parish in the Anyang 1 District of the Second Vicariate of the Diocese of Suwon. It is the local parish where Catholics in Dongan-gu, Anyang, celebrate Mass and the sacraments and continue catechesis and community life. Its patron saint is St. Francis Choe Kyong-hwan, one of the Korean martyrs. The Catholic Directory of Korea also records the apostolic presence of the Sisters of Our Lady of Perpetual Help, showing that religious sisters share in the pastoral life of the parish.
Hogye-dong Parish took shape within the wider growth and division of Catholic communities across the Anyang area. Today it belongs to the Anyang 1 District and serves the ordinary liturgical and faith life of local Catholics. Its long-standing presence in the area, together with its patronage by a Korean martyr saint, allows visitors to see both the development of the local Church around Anyang and the continuing memory of Korea’s tradition of martyrdom.
History & origins
The beginnings of Hogye-dong Parish are tied to the expansion of the parish network in the Anyang area during the 1970s. According to the Diocese of Suwon’s history of Jungang Parish, Jungang had served as a center of evangelization for Anyang, Gunpo, and Uiwang from the 1950s and then separated Hogye-dong Parish in 1975. The Catholic Directory of Korea records December 4, 1975, as the establishment date of Hogye-dong Parish. This was part of a broader transition from a structure in which one parish covered a wide territory to a more localized network of parish communities corresponding to changing residential areas.
As the Catholic population of the Anyang area continued to grow, additional parishes emerged from Jungang Parish and the parishes that had been separated from it. Diocesan material explains that communities in this network, including Hogye-dong, were subsequently connected with the formation of parishes such as Ojeon-dong, Gwanak, Indeogwon, Hopyeong, Gunpo, and Mokgam. The history of Hogye-dong Parish therefore belongs not only to the growth of a single parish but also to the gradual development of a denser pastoral structure across Anyang, Gunpo, and Uiwang as the region changed.
On November 30, 2025, the official history of the Diocese of Suwon records a Mass marking the fiftieth anniversary of the establishment of Hogye-dong Parish. The half-century that began with the 1975 separation shows how the parish developed alongside the urban growth of the Anyang area. The present church inherits this long history of local Catholic life and the wider story of parish development in the region.
