About this place

Hauhyeon Catholic Church is both an active parish church and a place of Catholic history designated by the Diocese of Suwon as a “Pilgrimage Historic Site.” The Hauhyeon area of Uiwang preserves the memory of a Catholic village where believers gathered while fleeing persecution, and the diocese also identifies it as a place connected with the refuge of St. Beaulieu and Blessed Thomas Han Deok-un.

Its distinctive character lies in the way memories of the persecuted Church and present parish life overlap in the same setting. A historic priest’s residence is preserved as cultural heritage, while the church and its surroundings invite reflection on how earlier Catholics protected their faith in hiding and how the community later continued a public liturgical life.

Hauhyeon is therefore best understood not simply as an old church to be viewed, but as a pilgrimage place for reflecting on the lives of earlier believers and the memory of martyrs. Visitors encounter several layers of Catholic history in one site: a Catholic village, a parish community, a heritage place, and a contemporary setting for pilgrimage.

History & origins

The exact date when a Catholic village first formed at Hauhyeon cannot be established with certainty. The Diocese of Suwon likewise avoids fixing a precise date and, citing Bonggyojasul, published in 1901, explains that poor Catholics gathered and lived here around the periods of persecution. This community became both a refuge for believers fleeing persecution and a place where the faith could be maintained.

Hauhyeon was established as a parish in 1900, becoming one of the early parishes in the Suwon region. The parish contributed not only through liturgy and evangelization but also through local education, including efforts to reduce illiteracy and introduce new learning through the Gyeongae lecture school. The priest's residence built in 1906 remains an important architectural witness to the parish's early consolidation.

The present church building was erected in 1965 under the pastor Fr. Kim Yeong-geun, using building materials provided through a U.S. military unit, according to diocesan sources. The older priest's residence was recognized for its historical value and designated Gyeonggi-do Monument No. 176 in 2001.

Hauhyeon's historical significance was formally reaffirmed on November 29, 2020, when the Diocese of Suwon proclaimed it a “Pilgrimage Historic Site” together with Wangnim, Anseong, and Yongmun churches. Hauhyeon thus brings together, in one place, layers of Catholic history stretching from a persecuted village community to an established parish, a center of local education, and a contemporary destination for pilgrimage. Hauhyeon’s history also shows that the transition “from Catholic village to parish” was not a single completed event. Over time the community maintained and rebuilt its church facilities, developed educational activities, and broadened its relationship with the surrounding society. The heritage designation of the priest’s residence and the later diocesan proclamation of a pilgrimage historic site belong to different periods, but both serve the shared purpose of preserving the layers of faith memory accumulated at Hauhyeon and making them accessible to later generations.
