About this place
Hanam Catholic Church is a parish of the Second Vicariate, Hanam-Yangpyeong District, in the Diocese of Suwon, serving a Catholic community in the central living area of Hanam. It is registered in the official Catholic directory as an independent parish and is dedicated to St. Paul Chong Ha-sang, a Korean martyr saint.
Its patronage under St. Paul Chong Ha-sang gives Hanam Parish a clear spiritual identity. Under the name of a Korean lay leader and martyr, the parish provides Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, prayer, and fellowship, becoming an everyday place where Catholics in the city learn to connect the Gospel with community responsibility.
The present name “Hanam” succinctly expresses a parish identity serving the wider city rather than being defined only by one neighborhood. The church provides local Catholics with an accessible base for liturgy and sacramental life and, together with other parishes of the Hanam-Yangpyeong District, forms part of the pastoral network of the local Church.
History & origins
Hanam Parish was established as a parish of the Diocese of Suwon on September 5, 1997. Its first name was Sinjang 2-dong Parish, and later that same year the Diocese of Suwon changed the name to Hanam Parish.
The change of name shows the community moving from an initial title based on the local administrative neighborhood to one representing the broader Hanam area. Publicly available official and Catholic press sources do not provide enough detail to verify the date of an early church construction or the specific mother parish from which it was separated, so no unverified building or separation history has been added.
The name “Hanam Parish” then became established, replacing the initial neighborhood-based title with the broader city name as the parish’s continuing official identity.
