About this place

Gwonseon 2-dong Catholic Church is a parish of the Gwonseon District in the First Vicariate of the Diocese of Suwon, serving Catholics in and around Gwonseon 2-dong through Mass and the sacraments. Its patron is St. Catherine of Siena, remembered for her life of prayer and dedication to the Church. The parish's present role is to connect liturgical life with catechesis, devotional practice, small Christian communities, and service within the local neighborhood.

Gwonseon 2-dong is not an old historical shrine but a parish formed in response to the growth of Catholics and changing residential patterns in an urban area. Its significance lies in the way a new community separated from an older parish, clarified its own name, and developed a distinct parish identity within a single generation. Today the church is the ordinary center where local Catholics celebrate the liturgy together and hand on the faith within families and across generations.

History & origins

Gwonseon 2-dong Parish began in August 2007 when a Catholic community in the Gwonseon area of Suwon was separated from Gwonseon-dong Parish. The new parish, centered at the time on Gokbanjeong-dong, began to organize an independent pastoral community with its own liturgy, catechesis, and parish associations. It was an example of the diocese dividing an existing parish territory and forming a new community in response to urban expansion and changing residential patterns.

According to the diocesan chronology, in 2012 the parish officially changed its name from Gokbanjeong-dong to Gwonseon 2-dong and received approval for St. Catherine of Siena as its patron. The change was more than a simple alteration in wording; it reflected the local administrative identity and the actual residential area served by the parish, helping the community define itself more clearly.

In 2017 the parish celebrated its tenth anniversary with a Mass of thanksgiving presided over by the diocesan vicar and a parish-day celebration. The anniversary gave the community an opportunity to look back on its first decade of independence and prepare for the next stage. The history of Gwonseon 2-dong is therefore less about ancient architecture than about a modern parish being separated, named, and shaped into a stable local Catholic community amid the growth of the city.
