About this place

Gwangnam-dong Parish belongs to the Gwangju District of the Second Vicariate of the Diocese of Suwon and serves Catholics in the Gwangnam area of Gwangju, Gyeonggi Province, through the Mass, the sacraments, and catechesis. The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Korea directory lists it as a full parish, with St. Augustine Yu Jin-gil as its patron.

By taking St. Augustine Yu Jin-gil as patron, the parish carries a spiritual identity that remembers the martyr faith and dedication of the early Korean Catholic community. Within the Gwangju District, it provides continuity in liturgical life and brings together Catholics in an expanding urban area through catechesis for different generations and parish community activities.

History & origins

Gwangnam-dong Parish was established on October 1, 2004 as a new parish serving the Gwangju area of the Diocese of Suwon, with St. Augustine Yu Jin-gil as patron. Its creation formed part of the pastoral response to residential expansion and a growing Catholic population in Gwangju.

As the parish developed its facilities, the Diocese of Suwon recorded a groundbreaking ceremony for Gwangnam-dong Church on October 20, 2012. This marked an important stage in the community’s effort to secure a stable place for liturgical life after its establishment.

Continued development and growth eventually led the parish to prepare another division. A diocesan visitation record from the spring of 2018 notes preparations for the creation of Jangji-dong Parish, and on December 18 of that year the diocese formally established Jangji-dong from part of Gwangnam-dong’s territory.

This sequence shows Gwangnam-dong growing from a newly established parish, to a community with its own church-building project, and then to a mother parish able to give rise to a neighboring parish. Its history reflects the broader changes in the Gwangju District as urban expansion led to more finely divided pastoral territories and the creation of new parishes.
