About this place

Gwangmun Parish belongs to the Gwangmyeong District of the Second Vicariate of the Diocese of Suwon and serves as a center for liturgy, the sacraments, and catechesis for Catholics in the southwestern part of Gwangmyeong. The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Korea directory lists Gwangmun as a full parish, with St. John Bosco as its patron.

In addition to ordinary parish ministry, Gwangmun serves as the mother parish for two mission stations. This gives it a pastoral structure in which an urban parish also cares for smaller neighboring Catholic communities. Its dedication to St. John Bosco, known for his apostolate of education and ministry to the young, is also a spiritual sign pointing to the faith formation of the next generation.

History & origins

Gwangmun Parish was established on September 2, 2008 when the Diocese of Suwon reorganized parish territories in the Gwangmyeong area. According to the diocesan notice issued at the time, its initial territory included Gwangmyeong 6-dong, part of Gwangmyeong 7-dong, and the whole of Noonsa-dong and Gahak-dong. The new community first began parish life in a temporary parish space in Gwangmyeong-dong.

The creation of the parish divided territory that had long been served by the older Gwangmyeong Parish so that pastoral care could be provided closer to the faithful. During the preceding decades, population and Catholic growth in Gwangmyeong had already led to the separation of several parishes, including Cheolsan and Gwangbuk; Gwangmun formed part of this continuing process of pastoral reorganization.

The current Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Korea directory records Gwangmun as the mother parish of two mission stations. Thus, after becoming an independent urban parish, it has also continued to care for smaller neighboring mission communities. Its establishment in 2008 marked an important step in providing more locally focused pastoral care in southwestern Gwangmyeong.
