About this place
Gwangju Jangji-dong Catholic Church is a parish of the Gwangju District in the Second Vicariate of the Diocese of Suwon. It serves as a local center where Catholics in and around Jangji-dong, Gwangju, live their faith through Mass and the sacraments, catechesis, and parish community life. Its patron is St. John Yi Gwang-ryeol, a Korean martyr saint, whose witness of faith provides the parish community with a model to follow.
As a relatively young parish, the significance of Gwangju Jangji-dong lies less in an old church building than in the community that has taken shape here. Its central mission is the ordinary work of a Catholic parish: gathering the faithful for the liturgy, welcoming and forming new believers, and helping families and neighbors live the Gospel in daily life. Visitors can therefore understand the church not simply as a worship space, but as the home of a Catholic community continuing to grow and take root in the Gwangju area.
History & origins
Gwangju Jangji-dong Parish was established as a new parish of the Diocese of Suwon on December 18, 2018. It began as the diocese's 215th parish and chose St. John Yi Gwang-ryeol as its patron. Once the parish had been erected, its most immediate task was to secure a place where the new community could celebrate Mass together and conduct catechetical and pastoral activities.
Only seventy days after its establishment, the parish prepared a temporary church. A one-story building with a floor area of 198 square meters was erected on a 2,277-square-meter site, and the community celebrated its entrance Mass there on February 28, 2019. Even before a permanent church could be completed, the parish thus secured the essential space needed for the faithful to gather.
This early stage shows that the history of Jangji-dong Parish began primarily with the formation of a community rather than with a grand facility. From the outset, the faithful created a base from which they could celebrate the liturgy and begin parish ministry together, and the temporary church became the first concrete step in establishing the new local community as an independent parish.
