About this place
Gwanggyo 2-dong Parish belongs to the Yeongtong District of the First Vicariate of the Diocese of Suwon and serves Catholics living around the Suwon–Yongin boundary within the Gwanggyo area. The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Korea directory lists Gwanggyo 2-dong as a full parish, with St. Francis of Assisi as its patron.
Its dedication to St. Francis gives the community a spiritual sign pointing to evangelical poverty, fraternity, and gratitude for creation. Through Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and devotional life, the parish gathers Catholics dispersed across a new urban district into one local community and connects them with the liturgical and pastoral life of the Diocese of Suwon.
History & origins
Gwanggyo 2-dong Parish was established in 2011 amid the development and population growth of the Gwanggyo area. For many years after its founding, securing a permanent church remained a major goal, and parishioners continued their liturgical life in temporary spaces while preparing for construction.
Construction of the new church began on February 22, 2020. Diocesan construction materials described a building planned with one basement level and six floors above ground, marking the point at which nearly a decade of preparation for a permanent church moved into actual construction.
After about thirteen months of work, Bishop Mathias Lee Yong-hoon presided at the entrance Mass on April 18, 2021. The diocese recorded the event as the completion of a long-standing parish project and the beginning of a new stage of evangelization in the area. The movement from temporary worship spaces to a permanent church building is the central transformation in the early history of Gwanggyo 2-dong Parish.
