About this place
Gwanggyo 1-dong Parish belongs to the Yeongtong District of the First Vicariate of the Diocese of Suwon and serves as a center for liturgy, the sacraments, and catechesis for Catholics in the Gwanggyo area of Yeongtong-gu, Suwon. The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Korea directory lists it as a full parish, with Mary Assumed into Heaven as its patron.
By taking the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary as its patronal mystery, the parish holds Mary’s faith and obedience before the community as a spiritual model. Although situated in a relatively new urban district, it brings children, young people, and adults together as one local church through Mass, the sacraments, and parish activities. The present church provides the stable center from which Catholics in the Gwanggyo area continue their liturgical life.
History & origins
The present Gwanggyo 1-dong Parish was established on August 28, 2012 under the name “Gwanggyo Second Parish.” As the Gwanggyo new-town area expanded, a separate pastoral community was created, and Mary Assumed into Heaven was chosen as its patron.
When the diocese adopted a policy of using administrative-dong names for parish names, the parish was renamed Gwanggyo 1-dong Parish on April 10, 2015. Its founding name therefore differs from its present name, and this change is essential to understanding the parish’s chronology.
Work toward a permanent church took concrete form with a groundbreaking Mass on February 23, 2019, followed by the start of construction in March. After the building process, the community celebrated the entrance Mass for the new church on November 21, 2020 and began its liturgical life in the present building.
In 2022 the parish celebrated the tenth anniversary of its establishment. A commemorative exhibition reviewed a decade of parish events, the construction process, Sunday-school and youth activities, and Legion of Mary life. The rapid sequence of establishment, renaming, and construction of a permanent church reflects the way the parish developed alongside the growth of the Gwanggyo urban area.
