About this place
Gwanak Parish belongs to the Anyang 1 District of the Second Vicariate of the Diocese of Suwon and serves Catholics in the Manan-gu area of Anyang through Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and parish community life. The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Korea directory identifies Gwanak as a full parish and lists St. Stephen Min Geuk-ga as its patron.
By taking St. Stephen Min Geuk-ga as patron, the parish keeps the faith of the Korean martyrs as part of its spiritual memory. Centered on Sunday and weekday liturgy, it is the basic pastoral community in which children, young people, and adults learn and practice the faith together. For visitors, the meaning of Gwanak is therefore not limited to its church building; it is the center of a Catholic parish community that has taken root over time in northern Anyang.
History & origins
Gwanak Parish was established on January 30, 1998 after being separated from Seoksu-dong Parish. Once the new parish became independent, one of its major tasks was to provide a permanent church in which the community could gather.
Construction formally began with a groundbreaking ceremony on March 19, 2000. The work continued for about three years and six months, resulting in a church complex of approximately 1,584 square meters in total floor area. On October 26, 2003, Bishop Paul Choi Deok-ki, then Bishop of Suwon, presided at the dedication, bringing the parish’s long church-building process to an official completion.
During the building period, the parish sought not only to secure a place for liturgy but also to create a space open to the surrounding community. A bazaar and cultural activities held around the time of the dedication reflected the parish’s intention to make the church a place where local residents as well as parishioners could encounter the community.
In 2023, a Mass was held to mark the twenty-fifth anniversary of the parish’s establishment. The sequence of separation from Seoksu-dong, construction of its church, and the accumulation of a generation of parish life shows how Gwanak developed from a newly created community into an established local parish.
