About this place
Guseong Catholic Church is a parish of the Giheung District in the First Vicariate of the Diocese of Suwon, serving Catholics in the Guseong area of Yongin through Mass and the sacraments. Its patron is St. Peter Yu Tae-chol, the young Korean martyr, and the parish remembers his steadfast faith while helping different generations learn and hand on the Catholic faith. The participation of the Olivetan Benedictine Sisters in parish apostolate is also part of the community's present character.
The parish has a relatively large liturgical space together with facilities for education and parish meetings, supporting not only Sunday Mass and sacramental life but also catechesis, lay associations, youth ministry, and family faith formation. The importance of Guseong Catholic Church lies less in the size of the building itself than in its role as a shared center of faith for a large Catholic community that took shape amid the rapid growth of the Giheung area of Yongin.
History & origins
Guseong Parish was established in the Diocese of Suwon on January 30, 2001. As the new community grew and its pastoral activities expanded, one of its major tasks was to provide a more stable church building with adequate spaces for liturgy, education, and parish gatherings. Parishioners prepared for the project through fundraising events and by offering the Rosary and Eucharistic adoration for the intention of building the church.
The new church was dedicated on June 8, 2008. Diocesan records described a structure with two basement levels and three floors above ground, including the main church, catechetical rooms, a music practice room, offices, and parking facilities. It was designed not only as a place for Mass, but as a complex capable of supporting the educational, communal, and pastoral needs of a growing parish.
Parishioners participated in the building process through everyday forms of fundraising, including savings-bank campaigns, food sales, and bazaars, while also offering large numbers of Rosaries and hours of Eucharistic adoration. This process shows that the church was not merely an administrative facility but a space built through accumulated prayer and communal participation. It subsequently became a center for liturgy, education, and fellowship for a large Catholic community in the Giheung area of Yongin.
