About this place
Gusan Martyrs' Shrine is a shrine of the Diocese of Suwon that preserves the memory of the historic Catholic village of Gusan and of the martyrs from this area, especially St. Anthony Kim Seong-u. The shrine includes the grave and memorial spaces of the saint, who was born in Gusan, bore witness to the faith, and was buried in his native village. Pilgrims can therefore reflect here on the faith of the Korean martyrs in direct connection with the history of a real local Catholic community.
The meaning of the site is not limited to the tomb of a single saint. Gusan was a Catholic village that produced several martyrs, including Anthony Kim Seong-u and members of his family, and it was a place where believers formed a community and handed on the faith despite persecution. The present shrine preserves that memory as a place of prayer, pilgrimage, and veneration of the martyrs. While the nearby Gusan Catholic Church serves the ordinary parish life of local Catholics, the shrine recalls the deeper historical roots of that community and its memory of martyrdom.
History & origins
The arrival of the Catholic faith in Gusan can be traced to around 1830. Anthony Kim Seong-u and his brothers embraced the faith and evangelized relatives and neighbors, helping the village develop into a Catholic community. In 1836, Fr. Pierre Maubant of the Paris Foreign Missions Society, newly arrived in Korea, appointed Kim as the local leader and established the Gusan mission station. Kim's home served as a center of faith where a missionary could stay and believers could gather.
The Gusan community suffered severe trials during the persecutions surrounding 1839. Anthony Kim Seong-u refused to abandon his faith despite arrest and punishment and was executed by strangulation on April 29, 1841. His brothers, son, relatives, and other believers connected with Gusan also died in prison or were martyred; the Korean bishops' martyrs commission identifies nine martyrs from Gusan. Anthony Kim was beatified in 1925 and canonized with the Korean Martyrs by Pope John Paul II in 1984.
The Catholic community of Gusan continued after the persecutions, and in 1977 the Gusan shrine was established in Mangwol-ri together with a memorial to Anthony Kim Seong-u. The site later developed as a place of pilgrimage centered on the saint's grave and spaces commemorating the martyrs of Gusan. Its history shows that the shrine is not merely a monument to a past persecution, but a place where the faith preserved by a Catholic village across generations and the witness of its martyrs are carried into the present through prayer and pilgrimage.
