About this place
Gusan Catholic Church is a parish of the Hanam-Yangpyeong District in the Second Vicariate of the Diocese of Suwon, serving the ordinary faith life of Catholics in and around Mangwol-dong, Hanam. Its patron is St. Anthony Kim Seong-u, who was born in Gusan and bore witness to the faith. The parish's liturgy, catechesis, and sacramental life give present-day form to the faith exemplified by this martyr saint.
The nearby Gusan Martyrs' Shrine, despite the similar name, is primarily a place of pilgrimage and veneration of the martyrs, whereas Gusan Catholic Church is the parish where local Catholics regularly celebrate Mass and the sacraments. At the same time, the parish preserves the memory of the old Gusan Catholic village and its historic former church, bringing the present pastoral community into contact with the area's Catholic heritage. Visitors should therefore understand the parish and the shrine not as interchangeable sites, but as two places carrying the same tradition forward in different ways.
History & origins
The Catholic community of Gusan existed as a mission station long before the parish itself was established. In 1836, Fr. Pierre Maubant established a mission station in Gusan and appointed Anthony Kim Seong-u as its leader. The community subsequently remained active under the jurisdiction of several parishes, including Jonghyeon, Yakhyeon, and Baekdong. After the Korean War, a new mission hall was built in Mangwol-ri in 1956, providing the community with a dedicated liturgical space.
After the Diocese of Suwon was erected, the Gusan mission station was transferred to the new diocese in 1963 and placed under Gyeongan Parish, later coming under Sinjang Parish. Land for a church was purchased in 1975, and in June 1979 Gusan became an independent parish. When the martyr Anthony Kim Seong-u was canonized in 1984, the parish's long local history of faith and the witness of its patron saint became an even more explicit part of its identity.
The former Gusan church was built in 1956 through the voluntary labor and fundraising of local residents and Catholics. When the site was threatened by the development of the Hanam Misa district, the building was preserved by moving it about 200 meters while keeping its original form intact. In 2023 it was registered as a Gyeonggi-do cultural heritage property. The old church thus preserves both the memory of a community that grew from a mission station into a parish and a surviving example of postwar Catholic architecture built through local cooperation.
