About this place
Gunpo Catholic Church is a parish of the Gunpo-Uiwang District in the Second Vicariate of the Diocese of Suwon and has long served the liturgical and sacramental life of Catholics in the Gunpo area. Its patrons are the 103 Korean Martyr Saints, and the parish takes the martyrs' faith as a spiritual foundation for its liturgy, catechesis, service, and community life. The apostolic presence of the Sisters of St. Andrew has also formed part of parish life.
Gunpo Parish has not only served its own local Catholics but has also acted as a mother parish during the formation of newer parish communities in the surrounding area. The present church is the central place where a community formed over decades celebrates Mass and educates younger generations in the faith. Visitors can therefore understand it not primarily as a pilgrimage facility, but as a living urban parish that carries the history of a Catholic community taking root and later giving rise to new parishes in a rapidly changing metropolitan area.
History & origins
The Catholic community in Gunpo gradually developed before the parish itself was established. As the number of Catholics and the urban population grew, the need for a separate parish increased, and Gunpo Parish was separated from Hogye-dong Parish and erected on September 18, 1984. The new community, dedicated to the Korean Martyr Saints, then worked to expand its initial facilities and provide a church and spaces for education and parish life.
The Korean Catholic Encyclopedia records the parish's efforts after its establishment to enlarge its facilities in response to increasing membership and to complete the church during the mid-1980s. Parishioners shared the burden of construction and the repayment of debts, and the dedication of the church in 1988 marked the completion of this first building phase. It was a period in which Catholics in a rapidly growing Gunpo established both the physical and pastoral foundations of an independent parish.
Gunpo later became one of the mother parishes from which newer Catholic communities in the surrounding area emerged. In 2009 the parish marked its 25th anniversary with a commemorative Mass presided over by the diocesan bishop and renewed its identity as a parish dedicated to the 103 Korean Martyr Saints. Its history thus follows the growth of a metropolitan Catholic community from independence and church construction to supporting the formation of new neighboring parishes.
